It is my pleasure to welcome your participation as a faculty
member for the Kauai 1988 Y.P.O. International University.
This memo will provide some background on the university, and
the current status of the education program.
The Site
We will be located at theE:41ew Westin Kauai (formerly. the
Kauai Surf), scheduled to;be completed in September of this
year.
Kauai is one of the most ?beautiful islands in the world.
Discovered in 1778 by Cain James Cook, this sunny Hawaiian
paradise is celebrated IA its breathtaking canyons and
valleys, majestic mouna4peaks?and picturesque white sand
beaches. Early sea cagtaths enchanted by the lush tropical
scenery, called Kauai the?"Garden Island" and their nickname
is still used today.
The Westin Kauai includes 560 acres of resort grounds.
Transportation around the grounds is provided exclusively by
Elizabethan carriages drawn by Clydesdale horses and
outrigger canoes and gondolas on a sculptured lake with ten
miles of shoreline.

A half-mile expanse of sparkling sandy beach, bordered by a
crushed marble and mosaic tile promenade; a 31,500 square-
foot pool, with its own island, fountains, waterfalls, rivers
and slides; a Golf and Racquet Club, complete with 12 tennis
courts and an exceptional 18-hole golf course designed by
Jack Nicklaus; a fully equipped European health spa; a four-
lane lap pool; 200 acres of lush, fragrant botanical gardens
and lawns; and the very finest in dining and shopping luxury
are what await you at this astounding resort.
General Education Objectives
For those of you familiar with Y.P.O. Universities, the pace
will be much slower, with fewer sessions and a much more
interactive format. (First-time faculty members will
probably still find the pace a bit frenetic).
We plan to provide much greater opportunities for informal
faculty/YPOer exchange, more participant involvement and more
unstructured time. Traditional lunchtime keynote addresses
will be interspersed with "lakeside chat" and wine/cheese
reception formats for our key speakers.
Education Particulars
Under the direction of Dr. Pierre Mornell, a new form of
panel presentation format- iins been deVeloped and "fine tuned"
at several Area Conference and Universities. Using this
approach, there is a legtutp on ,a ggneral topic in the first
hour, followed by a panel alf two or three YPO'ers with
specific issues on thiE.toilic. Five minute presentations are
followed by audience participation in discussion of those
cases, along with similar issues being experienced by
audience participants.
This format has been used in the Personal Development
sessions and will be used again. In addition, however, we
would like to transport the approach into the Business area
for several sessions.
There will be an emphasis on the topic of spirituality, led
by YPO faculty mainstay, Dr. Mits Aoki, and by first-time
University faculty member, Rabbi Harold Kushner.
There will be a section on health, diet and fitness,
including an in-depth look at AIDS and on women's health.

There will also be a section on humor, under the direction of
Dr. Larry Eilenberg, Chairman of the Theatre Arts Department
at San Francisco State University. Topics will include fun
in the workplace, humor for the CEO, and a look at humor by a
well known entertainer.
In the Geopolitical area, there will be a section on Arms
Control under the direction of Dr. Coit Blacker from the
Center on International Security and Arms Control at Stanford
University. Exact structure of this segment is dependent
upon additional faculty to be recruited, and potential
participation of keynoters.
