Mr. Hunter is from Coronado, California, and was first ? elected in 1980. His position as Chairman of the House Republican Research Committee is the 5th Ranking Republican leadership position. He is a Member of the Armed Services Committee and can be best described as having a hawkish aaenda. 7. Mr. Wolf is well-known to you. He was first elected to Congress in 1981 to Virginia's 10th District. His most recent correspondence with us has been in regard to potential effects of the pay situation for top Agency officials and on his concern over illegal acquisition of US technological assets--undercutting US defense capabilities. He is a Member of the Appropriations Committee. 8. Mr. Horton is from the Rochester area of New York and was first elected to Congress in 1962. He is a liberal Republican who is known for his low-key approach. In 1985, he voted against the Republican majority in the House more than any other GOP member. We have had almost no dealings with him. You recently sent a letter to Senator D'Amato on the We sent Mr. Horton a copy of the letter as he was one ot 1.ie four Members of the New York Congressional Delegation who signed the original letter to you. Mrs. Bentley is from Baltimore County and was first elected to Congress in 1984. She spent some 25 years as a maritime' reporter for the Baltimore Sun. In 1969, she was appointed as Chairwoman of the Federal Maritime Commission by President Nixon, becoming the highest-ranking woman in federal government at that time. We had no dealings with her until hairwoman of the Technolo Transfer Task Force. Since then we have erie e er on e yan--i issue and the proliferation of CW weapons. She is on the Budget and the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committees. During a briefing of Congressman Duncan Hunter (R., CA) on 2 March 1989, he requested to meet with you to discuss the subject of technology transfer and to explain some changes he has made in the House Republican Research Committee. Congressman Hunter is the new head of this Committee and he has established a new Technology Transfer Task Force under the leadership of Congresswoman Helen Bentley of Maryland. The attached memorandum for the record is a report of the briefing. 2. Congressman Hunter now occupies the 5th ranking Republican leadership position. With the nomination of Dick Cheney as Secretary of Defense, the minority whip position will become vacant and Hunter is already positioning himself to move up in the Republican leadership. He is a strong supporte fQi Agency and was one of the House leaders against on the technology transfer issue last fall. 3. This request has been discussed with John Helgerson and we agree that there is merit in meeting with Congressman Hunter.
