Central Intelligence Agency
20 July 1981
Mr. John Blake
Staff Director
Select Committee on Intelligence
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
I understand that some question has been raised about a group of senior
business people who met with the Office of Economic Research over a two-day
period last month. I believe the enclosed materials will be helpful in
avoiding misunderstanding about the purpose or propriety of that gathering.
This small conference was but the. latest in a series of meetings with
experts from the private sector that have taken place in recent years in an
effort to improve the quality of our economic intelligence and ensure that
both our collection and analysis are properly targeted on the priority economic
issues.
As you will see, the materials are all unclassified and thus there is no
objection to your sharing them with members of the Committee or its staff who
are interested. At the same time, however, you will appreciate that the pri-
vate citizens who participated likely would not wish their association with the
Agency, even as consultants, to become public knowledge. We would, therefore, -
appreciate your care and sensitivity in the handling of the list of participants.
B.R. Inman
Admiral, U.S. Navy
Acting Director of Central Intelligence
