The morning session was devoted chiefly to discussion, first of administrative
problems, then technical problems.
2. A problem causing considerable inconvenience to the group working on
the transistor development was the classification of the bi-moathly report*. At
present the reports are prepared on an unclassified basis and, after reproduction,
are classified and forwarded to the Agency. After the rellorts are classified,
because of security restrictions,s are no longer available to those
working on transistor development.written the contracting officer 50X1
requesting that the reports be allowed to remain unclassified. We advised than
that we woad give them a prompt reply as soon as the letter reached our group.
. The matter of funds was discussed briefly. From the figures available
r
their expenditures appeared to agree fairly closely with the pro-rated
funds allotted the project.

4. A general discussion of transistors relative to availability and
-reliability folloeed. 114 were informed that' had announced to. types of 50X1
transistors as being in prcduatioa. Mese types, together with their develop-

The mg:livers do not believe that the characteristics of transistors are
sufficiently coatrollabl* for production. amassment, however, forced them to
go into produation. Production tolerances have not yet been- established.

considerable improvement in sensitivity thonld be possible since the sensitivity

has no AOC. Present invertigations Show that an additiacm4 transistor may be
required for each stage to which AOC is to be applied. These additional transistors,
however, will aspire a negligible gusset of power to perform their function. (An
AOC circuit using no additiosel transistors was added to the receiver in the
afternoon. This was applied to the first IF stag* oaly aad ceased quite notice-
able detuming.) The 1A-153 transistors employed in the receiver were selected
for seed SP resposse and amplification. The senora run of this type (production
type 253)) will, not function properly at MP frequeacies. The TA-157 (an MP
equivalent of the TA-153) is expected to operate quite satisfactorily at theee
frogOvociow emdpmednetien of this type of transistor is expected possibly within

7. Ovations& the engineers as to whether they felt that it 50X1
was nowfeasible to consider constructing a transistor tramemitter aad receiver
to cover the ramp of 2-8mcs. They stated that the transmitter parties was still
net feasible, but that the receiver (7* x 3i2a x i), with a sensitivity of 15
microvolts ends* emtput at 3 mw. into *how Ohm lead, should be readily obtain-
able by the time high frequency, productioa-type transistors are STSilablit

to the project.
8. Thou emsimeers indicated.* definite preference for junetion type 50X1
transistors and plan to use then wherever possible. They are convinced that the
tetrode typo transistor is the solution to RP operation (junction tyie with two
base connectiess).
9. The afternoon session, was spent in the laboratory. Weyer. shwa the
noWli coastructed receiver and test equipmeet used for the project. The receiver
was of breadboard easstraction and natUrAIly included no attempted miaiaturizatioa.
The cermet drain of the receiver was asaeured sad found. to be 16 ma. at 22.5
volts far the a -7. .. Asters. The engineers' believe that this nor* could be
red:need by ks by using the proper battery voltages for each stag* imetead of
the. voltage droppiag resisters employed in the breadboard receiver.

Subject: Report of Trip (Coat d ) 50X1 .
10. We were shown samoidniature ccaponents for us* with transistor
circuits. Among these were compcmition resistors manufactured by approxi- 50X1
mately 3/8 inches long and about 1/16 inches in diameter and cow
approximately 3/16inches in diameter end 3/8 inches long having capacitances
as high as r_ed7at 25 volts. We wore also shown merculy batteries menu-
factured by 50X1
U. Following the dammatrations in the transistor laboratory, we were
given &brief tour of the laboratory.
