Long Range Voioe Bruise's*.
1. On Thursday, 5 May 1955, ? trip was made to
by the fallowing Agency personnel!
The purpose of the trip was to operate and evaluate the TSS/
developed infrared long range voice communications
eruipment.
2. The equipment consisted of taro package units. 'tech
packspe consisting of a col,p.Late transmitter, receiver, viewer,
powersupp;r, stand and carrj.ing case. See Attachment A. The
eruipment *hen pacKed weighed 30 pounds per unit. During the
tests all members nf the prrty and operated the aA-,uip-
ment.
3. Tests began on the criiing of arrival at approximately
1100. Two tests rare :ads at this time, two at 1500, and the
concluding two te ti At :.300. A total of six teetr were red.
over a 12 tour period. The tests were made under the following.
conditionat
Diurnal--clear and strong sunlight
Nooturnal--clear And slightly deep with a Pill Limn
for good visibility
*Distance-60OG feet
Terrsin----over both level earth, and, level earth
and concrete
*Although this is long range equipment and is reported to have
worked satisfastorily over a distance of 13 atlas it was not
possible due to line of sight requirements and security eon,.
siderstions to work over a greater dist/moo than 6000 feet.

4. Tests number 1 ssa4 2. tpfirenimataly 1.5 mimetes was
spent in setting up the equipment. Co Sleet woe thsn established
over earth ten minutes after the setup. This quality et *pooch
was good, with a strong signal and toed readability. On test
numbor two the units were disaligned fres each other and thee
attempts were aide to realign then and establish contact bast
without auoeess. The units were than rspaolled and the next two
tests scileduled for the afternoon.
5. Tests ) and 4. Prior to the teats. the MS represen-
tative explained the electronic and optical operatic:a of the
souipment to the other three mere of the party. Teat amber
3 was performed at 1500 over ? terrain if both earth and concrete.
The quality of speech was poor. A strong signal was present
ut tne readability of the sipal was very poor due to high

In the next test, test number A., the equipment was moved to ?

coni.Utions was eomileted; the equipment was repacked.
6. Tests 5 and 6. Ti final two tests were made at 23?Ci.
One unit was set up and t.tontsot ?sta*.liehed for both testm
using loonlight for illuatination only. The speech and signal
quality in hat. tests were axe-silent. Absolutely no trouble'

Items recommended for improvement.
I. STAND AND TURNTABLE
a, The present tubular legs are to be made solid at. the

a. A front cover for the lead soliviide cell and the viewer
will he provided.
b. A recorder jack will be claced in the equipment.
c. A key input whereh the LOCO cycle tone nay be mores
keyed when the eqipment is in t. ie transmit-find position will
be added.
d. A shade or cap will be fitte I over the odulittion
indicator to provide additional security for night operation.
?. The pros nt volume control will be changed free'lineer
to logarithmic taper.
f. A sighting device et some type, either ago Anical or ?
optical will be added to the equipment.
