'Outworn The use of a pilot into the sUbject port was mendestory, although
the use of one was considered unneoeseary. No improvements to the spproca:olq

No port defenses were in evidence. No German and one Soviet ships 101104 in
port, all unidentified. No replacement of waterfront facilities was noted.
A drydock capable of handling vessels of about 10 thousand t1119 was 0/48A at
the bend of the midtae estuary. /tare were mdbile cranes of shont 4o tlns
capacity. Roads from the waterfront to town were good. An unieentified laege
scale construction project was rumored on the Island of Emmen. Tvt IMCICrty

aches to Wismar: Approaches to port of Wismar could be negotiated readily
a p s service, but the use of one was mandatory. 'Lie pilot usually
was picked up at the Wismar approach buoy located at 5105?N? 11 28'El but on
the instant voyage he was picked. wat.the Hannibal South Buoy. No indications
of any improvements to the approach or harbor of the subjeot port were nted nor
were any dredging operations in evidence. The coast lines of the approach were
from 20 to 12 ft in height and heavily forested. The channel's bottom was
described as being sandy and firm.
4. Port Defenees: No naval vessels or patrol craft were observed in sutjeot port,
nor was any aircraft activity in evidence.
5. Vessels Present: TvoGerman ships and one Soviet ship were in the bar*Jr.
WWiegui?We were estimated to be about four thousand tons and the Soviet
ship to be about 10 thousand tons, The names of the vesetle are not recalled.

6. Port Facilitie and ConstrUction: No replacement of waterfront facilities
was in evidence, There Was a drydock located on the bend of the middle estuary
of-the-harbOr. No activity was noted but ships of 10 thousand tons could be
docked. Nbbile cranes of approximately 40 tons capacity and in a good Atate of
repair Were along the dockaide. In the instant case, however, the ship's booms
were used in leading, Roads from the waterfront to the town were of stone and
concrete, approximately 30 ft vide, and in good repair, RumorS were that there
mis a large scale construction project on the Island of Ruegen,

Port Security and Populace: The security team oarded the ship with the pilot,
All memkers, as Weil as. the pilot, were German4 The security team was comprised
of members of the German People's P lice and was very thorough in its activities.
The customs representatives were women and were described as being very efficient.
The inhabitants of Wismar are in a group, very formal, cold, and often refused to
enter into conversation, When they Are encountered individually, however, they
are described, as being very friendly, Their conversation centers around nle
theme, Which is, "Don't forget us, we too are Germans." No indication wa
