Declassified and Approved For Release 2013/04/02 : CIA-RDP80M01009A001302100034-6 11, ? CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WASHINGTON 25. D. C. OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR Lieutenallt General H. A. Craig, USAF Commandant, The National War College Washington 25, D. C. Dear General Craig: 1955 As I mentioned to you by telephone today, I am deeply con- cerned to learn from your letter of 22 April 1955 that the Joint Chiefs of Staff have reduced CIA's representation in the 1955-56 class of the National War College from three to two. I urge you to make the .strongest possible plea on behalf of CIA to the Joint Chiefs of Staff to maintain our quota at three spaces for the 1955-56 class and for succeeding clasees. We could in fact use more than three spaces with real profit to the national effort. The five highly qualified candidates I nominated for next year were selected personally by Lieutenant General Cabell and me after keen competition and elimination by three screening boards, of which the last is the CIA Career Council itself. The com- petition has become keener each year and indicates growing awareness throughout the Agency of the value of National War College training to CIA's mission. You have assured me that our students in the past have completed the course with distinction; I can assure you in turn that CIA graduates have brought a rich experience back to their work here. This has helped me greatly in integrating our efforts with those of the rest of the intelligence community, particularly with those of the Department of Defense. I therefore attach great importance to maximum CIA participation in the benefits derived from National War College training. I shall greatly appreciate any effort you malce on behalf of CIA to bring about a conclusion which I strongly feel is in the national interest. Sincerely, Allen .
