S. intelligence after his defection. The Director said he had always been of the opinion that this defector was not quite as Sirnon pure as he attempted to m~~.ke himself out, and obviously the corriment about U. S. intelligence contained in the advertisement is for the purpose of selling the book. Nevertheless the Director stated he would like a brief report setting fori:h the facts as to how this defector had been handled. Action: DD/P a, Noted an article in the IVew York Times of Sunda , b. Noted a State Department cable reporting a conversation between Ambassador Thompson and Khrushchev, and gave it to DD/I to read and return. (The message to be returned to State) c, Noted a report by DD/S covering temporary duty travel by Headquarters personnel -- foreign and domestic -- and stated while there had been some reduction since the submission of the last report, he desired that each request be carefully considered in order that travel can be reduced wherever pos~3ible. Colonel White commented that a copy of this report had been made available to the DD/P and DD/.I. e. Noted that Mr. Houston had drafted a letter to Mr. U. E. Baughman, head of the Secret Service, regarding CIA support to the Presidential party during the President's forthcoming trip abroad, and passed it to DD/P, DD/S, and the IG for their comments. The Director said that, based on final wording of this letter, a cable would be sent to the Chiefs of Station concerned c?vering Agency responsi- bilitie s for the protection of the President. Noted a letter from Mr. Gordon Gray, Assistant to the President, requesting a list, with certain exceptions, of all individuals cleared far COMINT and after some discussion it was agreed that Mr. Amory would discuss this matter with Mr. Gray upon his return from Augusta.
