THOMPSON September 19, 1988 The Honorable William H. Webster Director The Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 It is my pleasure to invite you to participate in the Navajo Nation's High Technology Forum October 16, 1988, in Leupp, Arizona. Your participation will help ensure the Forum builds upon the success of last year's Navajo Economic Summit in Tohatchi, by focusing on Navajo's potential to participate in the growth of one of the most vital sectors of our country's economy. The Forum's co-sponsors, Sen. Barry Goldwater, Mr. David Packard, and I, share a commitment to spur the development of Navajo's industrial base by focusing on certain sectors which hold the greatest potential. As in Tohatchi, we plan to have a blue ribbon panel of Congressional, corporate, state and educational leaders who will explore the high technology sector as it now exists on the Reservation: Navajo Technologies, Inc., Tooh Dineh Industries and General Dynamics. Our challenge will be to chart a course for the further development of the high tech sector. A list of invited participants and background information on the Navajo Nation is attached. The Forum will begin with a kick-off reception and dinner in Flagstaff, Arizona, on Saturday, October 15. On Sunday morning, October 16, the meeting in Leupp will begin with an examination of the progress Navajo has made since the Economic Summit in Tohatchi and an overview of the high-tech sector today. Discussion will then center on the opportunities for Navajo and the obstacles to be overcome in order to build a competitive industry sector. The Forum will conclude with the dedication of the Lucile Packard Science and Industrial Center, an industrial park created to serve the high tech sector on the Reservation. I hope you will be able to join us as we build upon Tohatchi and create thousands of new jobs for the Navajo people. POST OFFICE BOX 308 ? WINDOW ROCK, NAVAJO NATION (ARIZONA) 86515 ?
