Throughout the year the Fellows meet with guests to explore the issues and problems facing the Nation. The Fellows would like to meet with you in order to benefit from your insights. We would be most grateful if you could take the time to meet with them during December or January. You are aware, no doubt, of the caliber of the outstanding Americans selected by the President to serve as White House Fellows. During their Fellowship year, they serve as special assistants to the Vice President, members of the Cabinet, agency heads and members of the President's principal staff. I am enclosing a brochure which contains brief biographical sketches on the 1988-89 White House Fellows. We look forward to meeting with you. I will have Willie Bledsoe-Maness contact your office next week. Webster Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 Dear Judge Webster: 88-2082X On June 6, 1988, the President will announce the twenty-fourth class of White House Fellows. This group of approximately 15 outstanding Americans, selected from among over 800 applicants nationwide, will begin their Fellowship assignments on September 1, 1988. As you may know, Fellows serve as Special Assistants to members of the President's White House staff, to the Vice President, and to members of the Cabinet or to agency heads. On behalf of the Commission, we hope you will consider selecting one of the 1988-89 class of White House Fellows to serve as your Special Assistant. If you are interested, we will provide you with background information on the newly-selected Fellows, and during the period of June 20-24 we will arrange a time for you to interview the candidates. The work assignment is the focus of the White House Fellowships. All other aspects of the program are secondary. The Fellows take part in an education program which includes weekly luncheon seminars and occasional domestic and foreign travel. The Fellows' work assignments, however, take priority, and nothing should interfere with a Fellow participating as a full and productive member of your staff. If you are interested in interviewing a Fellow for the Fellowship year beginning September 1, please let me know who on your staff will serve as a liaison to review applications and schedule interviews. I can be reached at 395-4522. A set of files on the new Fellows will be sent to your designee the week of June 6. Interviews will be scheduled the week of June 22. I would be delighted to meet with you or your staff to discuss the candidates or any aspect of the program. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Marcy L.
