Bureau Coverage of Peking in Mongolian began with Pekingrs inauguration of the service on 1 December, Thus far, the 1l~00 GMT and 2230 GMT shows have proved to be repeats of the hour-long 1200 GP4T program. 2. Thus, at the end of December the backlog amounted to 24 items totaling some 20,000 words. Total weekly hours monitored: 275.1 (all voice). B. Communications 1, Circuit outages on both Tokyo to Washington allocated circuits totaled 711,% during December. This total was an increase of 19a on TWA and a decrease of 13~ on TWB. TWA and TWB were out simultaneously 56~, which is an increase of 9~ over the previous month. Outages on the Tokyo to Okinawa TOB circuit totaled ltd, a decrease of 3~, while outages on OTA totaled 12~, a slight decrease from November's total of 13~. 2. Pre-empted time decreased by approximately 14l~ hours on TWB, while the totals on OTA increased by approximately !t0 hours. 3. Approximately 48~ of the messages transmitted to Head- quarters were rerouted via common user due to the fact that the Tokyo to 47ashington circuits were out simul- taneously 56~ of the time. This total of 48p was the highest total during 1964. 4. Although theater traffic decreased by over one million words, December's total of 11,188,996 was still quite high. This is .the first time in the past five months that theater traffic has not surpassed the 12 million word level. Bureau wordage decreased by approximately 17,000 words. 5. To help alleviate the increased work load in the teletype unit, as noted above, bureau driver Mitsuhashi has been assigned regular duties as a teletype operator, temporarily one day each week. As his driver's duties decrease, and his teletype knowledge increases, it is planned to utilize him as a full time teletype operator eventually. C. Technical 1. A bureau designed monitoring unit for the still photography of TV images was completed during the month. The sheet metal work was performed by 5th Air Force, at the request of FTD, and the electrical work was performed by'.the bureau's Electronic Specialist. Tests of the unit are now underway and a report will be made to the Chief, Engineering Staff upon their completion. 2. At the request of the Okinawa Bureau the Tokyo Bureau investigated the availability and cost of a facsimile printer which could monitor expected transmissions of NCNA. Firms contacted were Toho Denki, Kyodo News Agency, and the Tokyo Aircraft Instrument Oo. ~~6yG~~~ R ~~[l.
