The Object headquarters is housed in the former Vendlerfabrik,(swhich is located in the vicinity of the main railroad station. The second and third floors house offices in which most of the employees are Russians. Special guards are posted on each floor, and German employees or visitors have to obtain special permits to enter these two floors. These special permits are issued by the Russian chief of the Cadreqlection. Object No. 1 has the following mines: a. Mine No. 1 is located at the so-called Gummi Bahnhof; approximately 2,800 to 3,000 miners work in this shaft. Shaft No.. 1 is engaged primarily in mining and in building new shafts 'which are gradually pushed to the surface under the old part of Johanngeorgenstadt. Shaft No. 1 is known to produce good ore. -b. Shaft 18-53 employs approximately 3,000 laborers. c. Shaft 147 employs approximately 1,500 laborers. d- Shaft 31 employs appioximately 3,000 laborers. e. Shaft 58 is called the "Geological Shaft" and is primarily engaged in geological analyses of the various layers close to the surface. Although the geologists of Shaft 58 have discovered that the granite contains ? considerable amounts of uranium they are now trying to establish if and in what way this uranium can be used an -a larger scale. In addition to these shafts, Object No. 1 manages -two motor pools: Garage No. 1, which is the motorpool for all trucks, dump trucks, and passenger cars) and the Eibenstock Motor Pool, which runs all the busses of Object No. 1. Other Object No. 1 installations are the ore factory located on Dimitroff- strasse, approximately one kilometer from the headquarters building; Capital Investment and Construction, located, in the Eibenstockerstrasse; and the HO Wismut stores, one of which is now in the process of being evacuated from the older part of the city because some of the &hafts are being dug under it. 7. Security is primarily the responsibility of two MVD1battalions housed in two recently constructed barracks; one on Eibenstockerstrasse and the second opposite Gummi Bahnhof. Each barracks consists of three buildings, each approximately 30 x 10 meters, with two floors. In addition to the two MVD battalions, there is the SSD unit with quarters in the Eibenstockerstrasse. he SSD has one official in each installation of the Object. Guards for the headquarters building, single installations and the shafts are, howeVer, pro- vided by Russian military units. There are two or three battalions Stationed in and around Johanngeorgenstadt. The units are mostly tank and infantry but there are various smaller AAA units around the entire area. The main military barracks are on Bahnhofstrasse. It is occupied by tank troops. Approximately 300-400 troops are housed in recently constructed. barracks in the vicinity of the ore plant. The security system is extremely tight. Each employee and laborer, including the Russian personnel, is checked very thoroughly by the guards at the gates or entrances of each shaft office or other installation. All employees and workers must get a special tag prior to entering their place of work; only a few leading employees can move more or less freely in all the installations of the Object, whereas the others are restricted to the area where they work. Miners are checked when leaving their place of work by means of equipment indicating radioactivity.
