1. Wismut AG headvarters is located in Siegmar-Sch8nau; the director general is
General Maltsovi (mu). Objects NO, 1 and No. 8 are located in Johanngeorgen-
stadt. Object No. 1 employs approximately 40,000 Germans. The Russian staff
of the Object headquarters consists of approximately 40 employees. About 80
Russian engineers and various technical advisors work in the mines and other
//installations of the Object. The number of Russian security and guard personnel
f cannot be estimated, but several battalions are assumed to be stationed in
or around Johanngeorgenstadt.
2. The Object headquarters is housed in the former Vendlerfabrik,(swhich is
located in the vicinity of the main railroad station. This building was re-
constructed for administrative use in 1946 when Object No. 1 absorbed Object
No. 12 and other minor installations. The building is of brick, has three
floors, and on each floor are about seven or eight offices. The building is
guarded on the outside by the blue VOPO and on the inside by Russian sOlc4ers.
The first floor houses those offices which have frequent contact with German
employees and laborers (bookkeeping, payment office, legal advisor, and the
reception room of the chief of the Object). The second and third floors house
offices in which most of the employees are Russians. Special guards are
posted on each floor, and German employees or visitors have to obtain special
permits to enter these two floors. These special permits are issued by the
Russian chief of the Cadreqlection.
The Object administration is sub-divided into the following sections:
Office of the Chief of Object; Office of the Chief Engineer; Bookkeeping;
Planning; Norms; Cadre and. Personnel; the Geophysical Section; Surveyor's
Office; Section 01 Explosives; Supply and, Material Accounts; Typographical
Section; Political Officer and Party Organizations.

4. Object No. 1 has the following mines:
a. Mine No. 1 is located at the so-called Gummi Bahnhof; approximately 2,800
to 3,000 miners work in this shaft. Shaft No.. 1 is engaged primarily in
mining and in building new shafts 'which are gradually pushed to the surface
under the old part of Johanngeorgenstadt. Shaft No. 1 is known to produce
good ore.
-b. Shaft 18-53 employs approximately 3,000 laborers.
c. Shaft 147 employs approximately 1,500 laborers.
d- Shaft 31 employs appioximately 3,000 laborers.
e. Shaft 31 His, with 1,500 laborers.
f, Shaft 54 with 3,000 laborers.
g. Shaft 51 with 2,000 laborers.
h. Shaft 58 is called the "Geological Shaft" and is primarily engaged in
geological analyses of the various layers close to the surface. Although
the geologists of Shaft 58 have discovered that the granite contains
? considerable amounts of uranium they are now trying to establish if and in
what way this uranium can be used an -a larger scale.
In addition to these shafts, Object No. 1 manages -two motor pools: Garage No.
1, which is the motorpool for all trucks, dump trucks, and passenger cars) and
the Eibenstock Motor Pool, which runs all the busses of Object No. 1. Object
No. 1 has approximately 30 trucks, 50 dump trucks and 30 passenger cars. All
trucks and dump trucks have white license plates with black letters. The usual
letter for utility vehicles is "M"; for example, M-31-44. Passenger cars have
license plates beginning with the letter "P"; for example, P-59-74. There are no
more: than , four numerals on all license plates. Object No. 1 has approximately
12 busses and trailers.
6. Other Object No. 1 installations are the ore factory located on Dimitroff-
strasse, approximately one kilometer from the headquarters building; Capital
Investment and Construction, located, in the Eibenstockerstrasse; and the HO
Wismut stores, one of which is now in the process of being evacuated from the
older part of the city because some of the &hafts are being dug under it.
7. Security is primarily the responsibility of two MVD1battalions housed in two
recently constructed barracks; one on Eibenstockerstrasse and the second
opposite Gummi Bahnhof. Each barracks consists of three buildings, each
approximately 30 x 10 meters, with two floors. In addition to the two MVD
battalions, there is the SSD unit with quarters in the Eibenstockerstrasse.
he SSD has one official in each installation of the Object. Guards for the
headquarters building, single installations and the shafts are, howeVer, pro-
vided by Russian military units. There are two or three battalions Stationed
in and around Johanngeorgenstadt. The units are mostly tank and infantry but
there are various smaller AAA units around the entire area. The main military
barracks are on Bahnhofstrasse. It is occupied by tank troops. Approximately
300-400 troops are housed in recently constructed. barracks in the vicinity of
the ore plant. The security system is extremely tight. Each employee and
laborer, including the Russian personnel, is checked very thoroughly by the
guards at the gates or entrances of each shaft office or other installation.
All employees and workers must get a special tag prior to entering their place
of work; only a few leading employees can move more or less freely in all the
installations of the Object, whereas the others are restricted to the area
where they work. Miners are checked when leaving their place of work by means
of equipment indicating radioactivity. The equipment is extremely sensitive
and shows even the smallest quantity of ore or ore dust on the workers. clothes.

8. The ore which is mined in the individual shafts of abject No 1 is packed
immediately in the so-called ore boxes (80 x 40 x 50 ems) which are con-
trolled for radioactivity and weighed in the soi-called ore control. points
in each separate shaft. The staffs of the ore cOntrol points are made up
exclusively of Russian personnel..- The control point puts on each box a slip
indicating the shaft, the mining date, the full name of the miner, and the
findings of the radioactivity checker. No box can leave the control point
until it has been properly processed, weighed and checked by the responsible
Russian. The packed ore is then transported by trucks to the ore plant.
After being processed. by the ore mill, the ore is packed in metal boxes and
shipped. by special Ore trains through Chemnitz to the USSR. The ore trains
have special guards consisting of a party of MVD or military persOnnal.
