ADMINISTRATION
1. The total personnel on duty as of 30 June was

3. On 21 June, attended a briefing on the
US Antarctic program given by Drs. Paul Siple and John H. Roscoe of
Admiral Byrd's staff.
4. Two further conferences were held during the month with
Personnel Evaluation Division representatives on the reorganization
of Publications Section, Reports Branch. PED stated that only
CAS-I+ grades would be allowed for the proofreading positions. A
memorandum was sent through channels to the Director of Personnel
outlining FDD's reasons for objecting to the PED recommendation.

6. Five persons completed Chinese and five Mongolian courses,

OPERATIONS
1. The 72nd., 73rd, and 74th meetings of the Subcommittee
on Exploitation of Foreign Language Publications were held
1, 15, and 29 June. The review of the Free World program was
completed, thus concluding the current program survey. The first
draft of the report to the Advisory Committee on Foreign Language
Publications was discussed. The next meeting will be held on
27 July. The degree of interest of Subcommittee members in the
Consultants Bureau translations was ascertained and the distinc-
tions between the Bureau's program and the FDD program were noted.
2. Reference to the CTS Index prevented 154 duplications
totaling 5,557 pages. This. represents an estimated saving of
$27,x.
3. The FDD scheduled Summary "Semimonthly Information Report
on Latin America" was discontinued with issue No. 35 dated 5 June.
The scheduled Summary "Monthly Information Report on
Africa" was discontinued with the June issue (No. 20) and will be
replaced by separate monthly reports: "Information on North Africa"
and "Information on Africa South of the Sahara."
4. I Iwas appointed to prepare a staff study
on the relative operations of for the purpose of
determining methods for closer coor natonanid cooperation.
5. "The National Economy of the USSR - A Statistical Compila-
tion" was, received in the Division on 12 June. Within five days
the 262-page book was translated and prepared for publication.
Printing and dissemination was completed by 29 June. The book was
prepared for typesetters 6 April 1956 in Moscow.

6. Samples of Russ articles and their English trans-
lations were prepared fort ISpeci Assistant
to the DD/I, for transmittal to for use in
testing a mechanical translator.
7. Two additional contributions to the Historical
Intelligence Collection in the form of Greek newspaper articles
on World War II espionage were transmitted during the month.

With ACSI, Mrs. J. Van Zandt, to discuss program guidance
on reporting of Rumanian and Albanian military information.

DD/P -- For RQM/OIS furnished within 24 hours translations
of Togliatti's interview, Nenni's editorial, and the Communist
Party Politburo statement in L$Numanite as part of the Division's
crash coverage of world press reaction to the Krushchev speech at
the 20th Congress.
Also for RQM/OIS performed eight pages of reverse transla-
tion, English to Spanish.

sound track of Russian films.
