Subject: Biography of Dr. William Montgomery McGovern (1897-
1964).
Dear Mr. Webster:
I am preparing a major biography upon the life of Dr.
William Montgomery McGovern, explorer to Tibet (1922-3) and the
Amazon (1925); linguist (spoke 12 languages); professor of
Political Science (Northwestern Univ. (1929-1964); OSS, under
Gen'l William Donovan during WWII (1942-1945).
Dr. McGovern recounts a few of his experiences, as a
member of the JIC and as the liaison between the Joint Chiefs of
Staff and Gen'l Donovan, in his book, Strategic Intelligence
(Henry Regnery, 1961); but I would like to provide a broader
chapter concerning his work with the OSS during WWII. I would
like to request your permission to examine the official records in
Washington, D.C., concerning Dr. McGovern's participations
during those several years. Would I be able to obtain access to
those reports and official records, for the purpose of the
biography?
