Svolvaer is the principal fishing center of the Lofoten Islands and is located approximately 80 miles south- west of Narvik on the Vestfjorden. The population of Svolvaer normally is about 3500, but during the fishing season from 1 February to the end of March, it is inhabited by about 20,000 fishermen. Codfish is the principal fish caught, and it is dried and exported from the Svolvaer port.
