2. In late 1954 or early 1955 the Yugoslav Government announced that 14 thousand
Albanians living in Yugoslavia were eligible to leave the country provided
they received entry permits to Austria or Italy.
3,1 Yugoslav authorities promised full cooperation in issuing exit visas when
applicant presented proof that he received an entry permit to Austria or
Italy.
1. The majority of the Albanians felt that this opportunity to leave Yugoslavia
was a trap and consequently only about one thousand persons applied for an
exit visa.
5. The Yugoslav police contacted the applicants, arrested them and, placed them
in prison in Sabac, in the vicinity of Belgrade. The arrests were made on
grounds of political unreliability.
6. One of two rumors prevalent in Italy concerns an agreement between Yugoslavia
and Albania to exchange political prisoners in the near future. All anti-
Albanians living in Yugoslavia will be sent to Albania and Albania, as its
part of the agreement, would send anti-Yugoslavs in Albania to Yugoslavia.
7. The second rumor is also of an agreement between Yugoslavia and Soviet Bloc
countries, whereby Yugoslavia will return all recent escapees to their
respective countries.
