In 1946 Anarigka Govinda, a German national who became a Buddhist, and his
Indian wife led an expedition to Tsaparang in west Tibet. This expedition
was for the purpose of viewing Tibetan art and Govinda-sl. sketches have
been published in the"Illustrated Weekly"in Bombay.
The Third Danish Expedition to Central Asia, which had completed its coverage
with the exception of Tibet and Sikang, tried unsuccessfully to get per-
mission to enter Tibet from 1949 through 1951. Tibet withheld its permission
because the leader was HRR.Prince Peter of Greece and Denmark. Tibet, certain
that it was to be occupied by the Chinese Communists: feared that the Chinese
would punish Tibet if it approved an expedition led by Prince Peter since the
US was aiding Greece. Tibet felt that the Chinese would accuse Prince Peter
of spying for the US in Tibet.
