On 25 September representatives from the CIA and Department of State briefed the Senate Intelligence Committee on Nicaragua. Senators Boren, Cohen, Bradley, Hecht, and DeConcini were present when the briefing began. Staffers in attendence included Charlie Battaglia, Natalie Bocock, Jim Currie, John Despres, Jim Dykstra, Regina Genton, Keith Hall, David Holliday, Sven Holmes, Merrill Kelly, Kathleen McGhee, Jeanne McNaughton, Jim Martin, Bob Morgon, John Nelson, Marvin Ott, Britt Snider, Gary Sojka, Blythe Tomas. Committee recorder Fred Ward was present to take a transcript. 2. Agency witnesses included Clair George, Deputy Director for Operations: 25X1 25X1 Office of Congressional Affairs. DAS Busby sat in for 25X1 Assistant Secretary of State Elliott Abrams. 3. Although the briefing was billed as a fiscal year end review, the Members were most interested in the future of the contras. Senators Boren, Cohen, and Bradley--the three Members present throughout--seemed clearly disturbed over the fate of the contras and the propaganda points being scored by the Sandinistas. DAS Busby was questioned at length about US diplomatic efforts.
