I UlEILAN Nan- Vie 14 February 1956 TCS 2562/58 C?W.1-4 -a MEMORANDUM FOR: Chairman: Ad Hoc Requirements Committee for Project AQUATOVE SUBJECT Further EXamination of Available UATONE Coverage for Possible Missile Launching Sites REFERENCE TCS 2557/58, 30 January 1958 1. As a result of continuing detailed examination of AQUATONE photography covering broad areas of the USSR, the following suspect installations were discovered: (a) August 1957 photography revealed the presence of rail construction activity seven miles west of NAtiinsk (56 10 N 87 31 E). At this point, a rail spur under construction leaves the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. Analysis of construction scars indicates the alignment, when completed, will be a loop. A number of dwellings are located within the loop area. There is no apparent economic activity in the area to justify either the construction project or the housing facilities. (b) August 1957 photography also revealed a suspect rail construction project at Itatka (57 02 N 85 12 E) near Tomsk. In this case an already existing spur, apparently associated with timber exploitation, runs from the Trans-Siberian to a point 17 miles distant. At the terminus of the existing spur a six mile extension under construction has been identified. The roadbed for the extension appears to be wider than required for logging operations and a felling pattern not normally associated with logging is evident. Two large unexplained clearings are located at the terminus of the new construction. ? .(c) July 1956 photography reveals that a rail spur off the single track line between Bialystok, Poland and Baranovichi, USSR was under construction. Construction operations were located at Liponie, USSR approximately 7 miles from the Polish frontier. The construction alignment suggests that the spur, when completed, will be a loop. However, unlike other suspect spurs, this Installation was to have a five...track siding approximately 2500 feet long near the point where the spur was to leave the main line. Upon completion, photographic interpretations of these three areas will be distributed to all TALENT recipients. 3. ORR recently has requested HTAUTOMAT to broaden the scope of the search program to include all existing AQUATONE coverage of the USSR and Satellites for possible launching sites. Included in the program will be search for possible road mobile as well as rail mobile sites. Should additional suspect sites be located, ARC members will be notified by further memoranda.
