Canada and 10 European countries will gather at St. Simons Island, G 1.'"tb-M?rirre?4167."'Ara W-eeliend of private and non- official discussions designed "to help improve mutual un- derstanding between Euro- peans and Americans." The meeting is the fifth of the "Bilderberg ? Group"?so- called because it first met at the ,Hotel-Bilderberg :in Oos- terbeek7Hol1and?and its first in the United States. . The group was brought to- gether in an effort to improve Mutual understanding on corn- Mon problems thru "a- frank and confidential interchange of views among informed and influential persons from many countries and many walks of life." ? ? No conclusions or recom- mendations will be drafted. Meetings are closed to all ex- cept the participants, to per- mit the candor and informal- ity considered vital to the meetings. However, a sum- mary of the discussions will be made public after the con- clusion of the three-day meeting. Chairman for the meetings is Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, who was instru- mental in bringing the group together for-the first time in 1954. It has met subsequently at Barbizon near Paris in March, 1955, at Garmisch- Partenkirchen, Germany, in September, 1955. and at Fred- ensborg, Denmark. In May of last year. _. Co-chairmen of the Ameri- can sections playing host to this year's- meeting are Gen. Walter deLjt, former ITliaersecretary ?Ytate and now vice chairman of the American Machnit_and Foun- dryCo., ..anr-15ean Rusk, a former AssistantSecretary of State and now president of the Rockefeller Foundation. The participants will decide when they meet on Friday whether they wish to be pub- licly identified. A spokesman for the group said today it will be-composed of two Ca- nadians, 37 Americans and 26 Europeans?from France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Turkey, Denmark, Norway, we en, thi17Enterlanly and Belgium. The spokesman said they could be categorized as 14 government officials, 11 poli- ticians, 11 industrialists, 9 ed- ucators, 8 lawyers, 6 journal- ists, 4 bankers, 1 military man and 1 labor leader. ?
