RE: Dinner Invitation
US Institute of Peace
6 April 1988
-30 March 1988
Professor W. Scott Thompson, a member of the Board of Directors of the US
Institute of Peace, has invited you to attend a dinner given by the Institute
in honor of former Ambassador to Israel Sam Lewis and Morry Liebman at
8:00 p.m., 5 April, at
Approximately 16 will attend the private dinner at Professor Thompson's home.
Deputy Attorney General Arnold Burns and Under Secretary of State Michael
Armacost along with several Senators, Representatives, and academicians make
up the guest list. Members of the press will not be present.
The Institute was created by Congress in 1985 to promote the non-violent
resolution of international conflict through negotiation and mediation. In
addition, the organization awards scholarships and grants to scholars and
leaders of peace from the United States and abroad. (See letter opposite.)
Recently, Ambassador Lewis was appointed President of the Institute. The
other honoree, Morry Liebman, is a member of the Board of Directors of the
National Strategy Information Center and Center for Strategic Studies at
Georgetown University. (See biographies opposite.)
Since you indicated an interest in attending the dinner, I recommend that
you accept. It looks like a good group and should be a profitable evening.

Bob has indicated an interest in attending
the attached dinner invitation -- I am
holding the time but would appreciate your
handling/following-up. I presume this is
an OK function. The only name I recognize
is Morry Liebman (an old Chicago friend of
Bill Casey).

Dear Mr. Gates:
ER 1 1 7 5A-8 8
As you know, the US Institute of Peace was established by an act of
Congress in 1985 to focus American experience and intellect in the field
of peace. The most important step of my fellow board members has been
the selection of Ambassador Sam Lewis as our new president, for which
reason it is my pleasure to hold a dinner in his honor, and for that
greatest of men, Morry Liebman, as well, who brought Sam to us. It will
be on 6 April 1988 at eight o'clock at
We)have now made over a hundred major grants in the field of conflict
resolution and peace studies, established a national essay contest for
high school students, set up fellowship programs for distinguished
scholars in the field, and undertaken groundbreaking work in establishing
an intellectual map of the field of peace research. Sam, whom you knew
in his past incarnations within the foreign service and department of
State, and who brought great credit to the United States, is now laying
very solid foundations for the long-term mission of the US Institute of
Peace. And Morry Liebman has, not surprisingly, played an absolutely
critical role on the board of directors in getting us organized and
moving.
I very much hope you can help me honor Sam and Morry on 6 April for the
important work they are undertaking. Please let me know here at Fletcher
whether you can attend, and a follow-up card with map will be sent out
prior to the dinner.
