PREFABRICATED BRIDES FOR USSR
S;,CTJRI'!"_? INFOI 1ATIO d 25X1A
FDD Abstract of
(ip; Germari; 1951)
25X1X The document is a carbon copy of a half-page typewritten report,a.s ioI1ows
Between 1949 and the.middle of December 1951 twenty-one prefabricated bridges of
37 and 51 quality steel were delivered. Since mid 1951, efforts have been ia.de to fab-
ricate these bridges of light metals. Duralumin-type sections are furnished by the
Bitterfeld Electrochemical Combine via the HettstedtiRolli will.. The Soviets speci-
fied that a bridge was to be built which, with the same load capacity and span width,
should be 50 percent liggter in weight. The bridge must also be easy to disassemble.
The specially created engineers' collective ran into great difficulties because of
lack of data on such things as the tensile strength of the sections available or the
types of xzmxzxUtX= connections. A norm committee set up by this collective obtained
data from Dueren/ Rheinland and established norms which in respect to stress values
are about 15 percent higher than those of the Federal Republic.
Work on the new bridges is in progress; Soviet control officers keep a constant
watch on operations. The target date, which was set up in July 1951, w5.11 not be met.
Since the usual stoppages and delays in procuring material have occurred, it will not
be possible at this time to set any target date. Frequently, too, material must be
rejected since it does not meet the norm specifications. Galvanized steel screws have
been used as connectors; more recently a special duralumin-type light metal rivet has
been used which is hammered without being softened. The drilled gusset plates are
atomic-welded to a supporting member which is itself a part of a section.
