A.D.A.URGES RESPECT
FOR VIETNAM DISSENT
WASHINGTON, April 24
(UPI) ?Americans for Demo-
cratic Action, a vigorous dis-
senter in its own right, de-
manded Sunday respect for the
right of American citizens to
dissent from United States pol-
icy in Vietnam.
Its action was taken as .the
liberal group acted on a series
of resolutions at the close' of a
three-day annual convention.
One resolution approved said
the Vietnam crisis had led "to
a number of governmental ac-
tions which have attempted to
stifle dissent, give preferential
treatment to supporters of the
war and, in some cases, violated
the rights of dissenters."
The resolution mentioned the.
draft reclassification of Michi-
gan students who staged a sit-
in at the Ann Arbor draf;
board, a new law making it a
Pederal crime to burn a, draft
card, and high officials' state-
ments that dissenters give aid
and comfort to the enenly?the
classic definition of treason.
The name of Cassius Clay,
heavyweight boxing champion,
entered the debate as an ex-
ample . of a dissenter whose
right to pursue his occupation
had been restricted. Another.
example was Julian Bond, a
Negro who Was forbidden Jo.
take his elected seat in the;
Georgia Legislature because, ota
his criticizm of Vietnam policy
Representative Don Edwards,I
Democrat of Califorlia, was re?!,
elected to a second term as:
national chairman. ???.1
