An airfield was located on the northern perimeter of Sorau (0 52/D 16), between the roads leading to Benau (0 52/D 17) and Grabig (0 52/D 06). There was open terrain north of the field. The landing field vas level and covered with grass. A concrete runway in good condition extended Cr DM southwest to northeast. * 2e Three hangars, steel structures with vaulted roofs and each about 70 to 3J meters long, wore located soeth of the runway. Taxivays led from the hangars to the rutreay. Tno four-story brick buildings, similar to German barracks installattonel were seen on the eastern edge of the field. The buildinre were still vacant in the beginning of 1951. The doors, windows, and nater pipes were dismantled. no other installation; were seen at the field. 3. In the fall of 19501 civilian labor details, who were working for the joviet Air force stationed in Sagan-Hueoeer (0 52/D 26), were engaged in dismantling the hangars at the Jorau airfield and re-assemblirr-: them at the Saran-Kuepper ?iirfield. This airfield was occupied by Soviet Air force troons. Two ham- :ars were completed by January 1951. 4. 1:.?'rom 19h3 to the tegilining of 1951, the field was not occupied by Polish -r Sovi t 2orce troops nor was it guarded by sentrieS. The landing field :as used as pasture land. ** Aircraft which flew over Jorau were stationed at the 3agan-Kuppper airfie d. After the simmer 1949, Soviet single- engine fighters with .in-line engines, retractable landing gear, and a red Soviet star were frerpently seen over sorau. The aircraft, mostly in formations of up to 12 elanes, practieed stunt flying.
