1. RS - Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Poland (CEP) #1 with E:
as Chief Instructor, was kicked off on Tuesday as Soviet de-
mands for inclusion of all three countries at the conference
table reverberated from Geneva. Casualties for our program
were both DDP division chiefs who were scheduled to speak.

minutes notice, with a short but highly effective presenta-
tion of EE's policies on area training and of the strategic

importance of all three count ies for the U.S.
(ONE), substituting for on the role of the three in
Soviet strategy, proved to be a stimulating speaker who is
exceptionally well informed on the area. He kindly volun-
teered to jump in for the major talk of the day's program,
on only 24 hours notice.
2. Total enrollment in this course now stands at 16, all CIA
and half DDP, including 1 GS-12+, 2 GS-131s., and 3 GS-12's.
This is clearly the best showing we have made to date in
pulling together a class for a course on Europe. Furthermore,
the intensity of the students' participation on the first day
and the sophistication of their questions suggest that we
will be able to develop excellent discussions in the frequent
class hours scheduled for this purpose.

3. principal attention will be directed toward Eastern
Europe throughout the coming 12 months since he will turn
in the fall to preparation of RS - Balkan States #1. Eastern
Europe clearly carries a higher priority than Western Europe
in respect to course re uirements in the "Study" category,
and modification of[ assignment in this direction will
leave only two top priority areas uncovered, i.e., South
Asia and Africa South of the Sahara. will continue to
support me on Western Europe . We plan to work up a new one
hour session on political life and social insti-
tutions for inclusion in the AA0

4. AAC ran three full days, on 5, 7, and 12 May,
with an attendance of 21 on opening day. This number is
considered large in view of the fact that 38 took this
briefing only in December. Of particular note was the
almost exact split between dependents and Agency per-
sonnel. This is the largest number of dependents, and
by far the highest ratio of dependents to Agency employees
ever recorded for this briefing. We believe this showing
results from a widespread recognition of the value of the
revised offering put on in December. The course was under
