1. The Area Training Roundtable derived a two-fold benefit
The Thursday session at which both groups met together for the first
tifne helped to clarify some of the questions in our minds about
the pros and cons of combining area with language instruction. A
remarkably broad consensus existed, that it is desirable to co-
ordinate these two types of training as closely as possible and,
at the upper levels of language training, even to merge them in
what we have called "integrated" courses. At the same joint session,
we also benefited from the new contacts made with agencies not now
represented on the Area Roundtable, such as NSA, Air, and Navy. Our
Friday session, for area only, was highlighted by a solid briefing
on State's area training mission and programs by Frank Cash, Head
of FSI's Department of University Training and Area Studies. Six
of the eight member agencies were represented. Next meeting will
be held at the Military Assistance Institute the week of 13 December.
2. Following our second meeting with you on a proposed work
plan for the Area Faculty, we are preparing a new draft paper which
we feel will be more realistically tailored to Agency needs and. to
our probable capabilities for the foreseeable future.

3. I was deeply impressed at the depth of
concentration on the area training problem, as clearly indicated
at the session which and I had with him on Monday.
In fact, I have experienced a sense of relief over the close attention
this problem has been receiving both in that quarter and from our
own PPS. There can be no quarrel with conclusions based on hard
facts, many of which are now in our possession for the first time.
4. AAS/ISB has furnished us with the German and French sound
tracks of the "Free Europe" film, which that section produced with
the help of native speakers lined up by us. The voices of
(French) and (German) come through admirably for the
most part, and our only recommendation for any future such effort
would be to tone down or eliminate the background music. We are
preparing to run the film in both languages over the lunch hour
on 28 October in 102 I Building for the convenience of interested
