SUBJECT: Weekly Activities Report

A. SIGNIFICANT ITEMS
None to report
B. OTHER. ACTIVITIES
1. First of a series of Area Staff meetings on the revised
program will be held on the 9th at 1430. The agenda calls initially
for discussion of our detailed plans for expansion and improvement
of the AAO's. Our problems include standardization of the scope of
the AAO briefings, adoption of alternative forms of briefings to suit
widely fluctuating numbers and needs of students going to various
areas, tighter arrangements with interested components for maintaining
a timely flow of information about prospective departures and for
insuring that personnel and dependents are actually made available
to us for needed area orientation.
3. We are planning a series of informal luncheon discussions
of current foreign area problems with participation initially limited
to LAS personnel. is arranging the first one concerned with
the conflicting impac of the Soviet Bloc and the U.S. on the un-
committed countries of Asia and Africa.
4. returned from one week in FSI's course on international
communications. He was not much impressed by either the organization
of the course or the calibre of many lectures. Coordination was weak,
and speakers over-indulged in personal recollections and opinions.
Of special interest were skits representing problems of inter-cultural
communications and overseas effectiveness. have been
informed and may use some of the techniques, if not some of the
participants, in the forthcoming IOE.

STATINTL 5, intends to schedule time on the 12th or 13th for
recording Part II of the "Free Europe" film in French. Thus we can
STATINTL take advantage of 0 presence at headquarters, and I expect to be
available for counselling on points of area content. We have so far
found interest greater in the French version of Part I than in the
German and have scheduled a second showing of that film in 2132 I
