1. The Nitro Chemical Institute at Fuzfogyartelep was the only explosive manufacturing
plant in Hungary. Powder types suitable for shotgun shells to artillery shells
were produced. In 1948 the plant was inoperative save for a limited production
of copper sulfide.
2. Power plant facilities are located underground, approximately 26 meters beneath
the surface. Nitro Chemical Institute is situated on the side of a hill, and the
power plant tunnel is bored horizontally into the side. The tunnel has a clearance
of about 4-1/2 meters verttcally, and is eight hundred meters in length before
emerging into the turbine room. There are three steam powered turbines of 11 thousand
horsepower total capacity. Turbines are six thousand horsepower, three thousand
horsepower and two thousand horsepower respectively. Water-is supplied via under-
ground pipes from Lake Balaton, approximately one kilometer distance. Coal is
brought from Varpalota via rail for use as boiler fuel. Narrow gauge dump cars
carry coal from the main wit1fta1444gotktrolleauai4tOne1kto1 theicbtiler and -turbine room.
Drinking water is piped in from well sources in and around Fuzfpgyartelep.
4. There are bout 35 underground bunkers scattered- throughout the plant grounds for
air raid protection. Accommodation is sufficient for about six thousand people.
All, structures above ground are constructed of brick and are one story. Wire
fence around property is cyclone type, two meters in height.
