There are 15 teachers' colleges in Bulgaria, including three in Sofia. Prior to World War /I, there was only one teachers' college in the countrys and so most elementary school teachers were secondary school graduates with no professional training. 2. Students are admitted to a teachers' college after completing five years of second- ary school. They must take examinations in Bulgarian language, mathematics, and singing. Tuition is free; however, college fees were 400 leva per year until 1951. After a 2-year course, graduates are either sent to teach in village schools, or continue their specialized studies in higher educational institutions. The study of Russian is compulsory for all students in secondary and h5ther educational in- stitutions, beginning in the first year of elementary school. In teachers' colleges, five hours a week are devoted to the study of the Russian language. 3. Bulgarian youths between the ages of 16 and 26 are members of the DSNM (Dimitrovski Silyuz na Narodnata Mladezh; Dimitrav Union of the People's Youth). Although membership is not compulsory, non-members have no change either of being admitted to a higher educational institution or of receiving employment in a government organization or enterprise. 4. All texbooks in the History-Department of Sofia University are in Russian. Among these are Ancient History by Andreev, and Ancient History of Greece by Sergeev. The professors are Bulgarian. Professor Dimitrov lectures on Archaeology, Professor Burmov on Byzantine History, and Professor Danov on Ancient Oriental History. Dimi- troy and Burmov are well-known Communists.
