nickel deposits have been discovered eleewhere in the Soviet Union since
that.tima? Therefore, if one counts in the high grads nickel depoetts later

the Soviet Union, it beoomes clear that the Kola Peninsula and Peteaalo are
now the , Bonet Untons most taportant sources of nickel by far. The f o1lowL

The Composition of the Ore
The Fetsamo ore i+s very riok. Ott orzttatno 1,5.43 percent nickel

xndivi us1 portiof of the ore are richer, over 10 percent. The Oa than

of the world, about 100,000 tone of aaeta11io nlokal w have m r sta1 content
of 3w5 percent. The Norvegten deposit in be, whtah are no longer being
worked, Iwmre operated on a 0.8 percent metsl content.
8. The Ore Reserves end production
The ore reserves are estimated at over five nillion toles. Jt is
possible that the reoerves are eoneideacably lerger.
The mining installations admit a pro4uotion of about 400,000
tons of crude ore per year or 1,200 tone per day. The production during the
perid 1842*44 estimated at 300,000 tons per year. This oorreepond$ to
sbont 8,000 tone of nickel and 34,000 tons of capper.

Theee two aluminum eiiieates are of importance as raw materiale
in the manufacture of fireproof eubetancee and of electrical insulators, etc.
The Kola Peninsula hae by far the largest deposits of these minerals
in the world, just ae it does for apatito and nepheiite. They are cyu tte
V
rseerves of 1~i-24 million tone in the Keyev O Massif in the eastern
part of the bola Peninsula. The area ie practically uninhabited and the
nearest railroad station is 11.0 Icm away. The depoeite were not worked at
all untti 1943, but atteapto at conc~imYraYton of the or had been carrtvd
out with success. It had been planned that these deposits were to be worked
as 4oon ae possible. However? extensive road and railroad installations
were required for this. It ie hardly likely that the depoette are being
worked y'et, bat it is quite possible that they will be in a year or two.
Besides these deposite there are also relatively email depoeits
of cyanite and sillimanite in three other areas on the Kola Peninsula. So
far as is knowns none of these deposits is being worked.
Cyanite is the more valuable of these two minerals. It is need
primarily for the manufacture of heat..reeieta t ceramics and for electrical
insulatore, ae well ae a raw material in the aluminum industry and in the
production of eilu?in. (Siluain is an aluminum= tlicon alloy). The ei,lhimanite
is used mostly for the manufacture of fire resistant eubetances.
The ,unite ,maleo...f the Xeye.v (e) Maseif contains for the most
part 4O 5O per et cy nite_ but some rich portions may contain up to SC per-
cent cyanite. The iron content, which is often excessively high in cyanite
deposits, is only i percent in this deposit. The enriched cyanite concentrate
contaIne only 0.2 percent trop. The aluminum oxide content ie 63 percent.
Cyanite and eiU i anite shalee from other depoeite contain only
15-30 percent cyanite or sihlimanite and, for that reason, cannot be compared
with the eyev ore.
