THIS AIRCRAFT (FIGURE 1) IS A TWIN-JETS SWEPT WING
BOMBER WITH A SPAN OF APPROXIMATELY 78 FEET AND A FUSELAGE
LENGTH OF APPROXIMATELY 125 FEET. THE WINGS ARE CRANKED
APPROXIMATELY ONE-THIRD OF THE WAY OUT FROM THE. FUSELAGE.
THE LEADING EDGE SWEEPBACK IS INBOARD OF THE 25X1
CRANK AND OUTBOARD OF THE CRANK. THE WINGS ARE 25X1
MOUNTED WELL BACK ON THE FUSELAGE. A SINGLE WING FENCE IS
LOCATED ON EACH WING JUST OUTBOARD OF THE CRANK AND A
PROBABLE MAIN GEAR HOUSING SIMILAR TO THAT OF THE BADGER IS
MOUNTED APPROXIMATELY 15 FT FROM THE CENTER OF THE FUSELAGE.
CHEEK INLETS ARE LOCATED ON THE FUSELAGE JUST FORWARD
OF THE LEADING EDGE OF THE WING. FORWARD OF THE INLETS THE
FUSELAGE AFT OF THE INLETS THE FUSELAGE IS 25X1
ALL THE WAY TO A LARGE EFFLUX WHICH RESEMBLES 25X1
THAT ORMER. THE COCKPIT IS LOCATED WELL FORWARD AND
THE NOSE TAPERS TO A SHARP POINT. THE SWEPT BACK EMPENNAGE
ASSEMBLY CONSISTS OF A LOW HORIZONTAL TAIL MOUNTED ON THE
FUSELAGE AND A LARGE, SHARPLY SWEPT VERTICAL TAIL.
WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE DIMENSIONS BEING 20 TO 25
PERCENT LARGER, AND A FEW DESIGN MODIFICATIONS THE AIRPLANE
RESEMBLES BACKFIN.
THERE ARE 7 OF THE AIRCRAFT ON THE FIELD. SIX ARE
PARKED ALONG THE PARKING RAMP. THE OTHER IS PARKED IN FRONT
OF THE LARGE REVETMENT IDENTICAL TO THOSE NOTED AT PLANTS 1

2. INSTRUMENTATION AND FIELD-TYPE LAUNCH FACILITIES,
CHELKAR AREA
47 50 N - 59 36 E (CHELKAR)
THREE INSTRUMENTATION AREAS AND ONE PROBABLE
FIELD-TYPE LAUNCH INSTALLATION HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED WITHIN
A 50-MILE RADIUS OF CHELKAR. THESE FACILITIES ARE PROBABLY
ASSOCIATED WITH THE KAPUSTIN YAR/VLADIMIROVKA MISSILE TEST
CENTER.
INSTRUMENTATION AREAS - TWO OF THE INSTRUMENTATION
AREAS ARE SITUATED NEAR CHELKAR AND THE THIRD ABOUT 45 MILES
TO THE SOUTHEAST, NEAR TUGUZ. THE LATTER AREA, POSITIONED
AT ABOUT 47 20N - 60 20E, CONSISTS OF THREE FENCED SITES
WHICH CONTAIN VARIOUS TYPES OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT. ONE OF
THE TWO AREAS NEAR CHELKAR IS ADJACENT TO CHELKAR AIRFIELD,
AND CONSISTS OF A SECURED AREA CONTAINING TOKEN-TYPE RADARS
AND SEVERAL OTHER PIECES OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT. THE
SECOND AREA NEAR CHELKAR IS LOCATED ABOUT TWO MILES
SOUTHEAST OF THE TOWN. IT CONSISTS OF TEN INSTRUMENTATION
BUILDINGS, EACH 20 FEET SQUARE AND SIMILAR TO THOSE FOUND AT
THE KAPUSTIN YAR/VLADIMIROVKA RANGEHEAD. THESE TEN
BUILDINGS ARE POSITIONED AT VARYING DISTANCES ALONG A LINE
ABOUT 8,400 FEET IN LENGTH. A POSSIBLE CONTROL BUILDING IS
SITUATED TO ONE SIDE AND NEAR THE CENTER OF THE BUILDING
ARRAY.
PROBABLE FIELD-TYPE LAUNCH INSTALLATION - THIS INSTAL-
LATION IS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 25 MILES NORTH OF CHELKAR,
AT ABOUT 48 16N - 59 45E. IT CONSISTS OF A FENCED SUPPORT
AREA AND A FENCED FIELD-TYPE LAUNCH AREA WITH SEVEN
ASSOCIATED VEHICLE REVETMENTS.
PROBABLE MISSILE LAUNCH FACILITY, NEAR BALAKLAVA
4 - 33 32 E
THE TWIN PADS OF THE PROBABLE MISSILE LAUNCH SITE NEAR
BALAKLAVA APPEAR UNCHANGED SINCE THE PREVIOUS PHOTO COVERAGE
IN 1956. NEW SUPPORT BUILDINGS, THREE OF WHICH ARE DRIVE-
THROUGH, HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED WITHIN THE AREA ENCLOSED BY
THE DOUBLE SECURITY FENCE. THE THREE DRIVE-THROUGH
BUILDINGS ARE LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE OLD FORT IN THE
SOUTHEASTERN EXTREMITY OF THE SECURED AREA. THE UNEXPLAINED
DARK SPLOTCHY PATTERN, SUGGESTING CAMOUFLAGE, APPEARING ON
THE PADS IN 1956 NOW EXTENDS TO THE SURFACE OF THE SERVICE
ROADS IN THE VICINTY OF THE PADS.
