1. On 22 May 1949 the Association des Amis de 1'U.R.S.S. in Algiers
sponsored a meeting for sympathizers and members at the Splendid
Cinema. About 600 persons were present. Among the speakers were
Henri Fabre, Secretary of the Association. Moussa Brahim, Secretary
of the Union des Syndicats Confederes, and Coussad (fnu), member
of the Association des Combattants Algeriens pour la Paix et la
Liberte. ti

2. The occasion for the meeting was the fourth anniversary of V-E Day.
The speakers worked over the familiar themes: the preponderant .~~
role played by Russia in defeating Germany, the great destruction
and loss of life suffered by Russia during the war, the vast
reduction in the military budget of the Soviet Union since the
war. Fabre pointed out that the U.S. desires war and is preparing
for it by making such alliances as the Atlantic Pact and establishing
military bases abroad. Another speaker stated that the American
materiel sent to the Soviet Union during the war arrived too late
and in too small quantity to be of any real help. Another said
that in Algiers there is a small group of anti-Soviet Russians, led
by Leon Dolgouchine, who are collaborating with the Americans.
