NOTES
Where Were the Terrorists?
As with our own Bicentennial celebrations, the ter-
rorists failed to appear in Montreal for the Olympics. In
spite of much apprehension and an assortment of reported
threats to the Olympics, including some hair-raising reports
in the final week that Palestinians and Japanese Red Army
terrorists were already in place ready to spring, nothing
happened. There were of course extensive security controls
and precautionary measures which may well have caused ter-
rorists to change their plans. While we may never know
exactly why no attacks were attempted, we are pleased to
report that the Olymp' a f ily without any
terrorist incidents. 50X1-HUM

NOTES
Suspect in the Killing of West German Banker Freed
West German authorities announced on 7 August the
release of Eleanor Maria Poensgen who was arrested in con-
nection with the murder of Juergen Ponto, a prominent West
German banker. (See the issue of 3 August.) She had been
arrested two days after the killing in Frankfurt and was
identified by Ponto's widow and his chauffeur as one of
three individuals who participated in what was apparently a
kidnaping attempt. Poensgen had claimed that she was on her
way to a party in Frankfurt at the time of the killing on 30
July and police investigation confirmed this story. This
apparently erroneous identification by two key witnesses-
could weaken their credibility in testimony during the trial
of the real killers if they are caught.

Anti-American Violence in Sardinia
An unusual episode of minor violence took place in mid-
August when automobiles belonging to U.S. Navy personnel as
well as a Navy building were firebombed in Sardinia. On the
night of 14 August eight automobiles were damaged, according
to U.S. military reports. All were privately owned vehicles
with AFI (Allied Forces in Italy) license plates, belonging
to personnel assigned to the Naval Support Activity on the
small island of La Maddalena, which services U.S. submarines.
Many of the personnel live in the villages of Santa Teresa
Gallura and Palau on the north coast of Sardinia close to
the NSA base, and the cars were parked near their homes.
During a 15-minute period the next night, nine more cars
were firebombed in the same towns, and minor damage occurred
when a firebomb was thrown from a passing vehicle at the NSA
headquarters building. An Italian fireman was injured, but
no U.S. personnel received injuries in any of the incidents.
Italian police near the Mt. Limbara U.S. Air Force
installation, about 35 miles from the scene of the fire-
bombing, received telephone warnings that USAF personnel
there would be the next targets. As a precaution, servicemen
and dependents living off base were temporarily moved to
housing inside the compound. Privately owned vehicles were
parked inside the site and local police increased security
around the area. No bombing attempts materialized.
No political group has claimed credit for the attacks.
The press has offered various explanations. The local
police tentatively identified several suspects, but no
conclusion has been reached as to their guilt. The police
believe the firebombings may be connected with the "Inter-
national Anti-Militarist March" that was taking place in the
area. One official speculated that some local Sardinian
extremists were unhappy because the march was conducted
primarily,by outsiders, and they might want to discredit it
by acts of violence that would be attributed to the marchers.
The authorities consider that the incidents appeared to be
primarily a form of violent demonstration rather than a
serious attempt to injure American personnel.
While U.S. business firms on the Italian mainland have
frequently been the target of firebombing by radical groups,
minor violence against the U.S. military of the type that is

Greek Court Refuses to Extradite German Terrorist
A Greek court has refused a West German request to
extradite Rolf Pohle, the German terrorist fugitive arrested
in Athens on 21 July, on the grounds that the crimes for
which Pohle had been jailed in West Germany were politically
motivated. (See the issues of 27 July and 10 August.)
Pohle was one of five prison inmates released by German
authorities in March 1975 to secure the release of a hostage
abducted by the anarchist 2 June Movement. The five were
given asylum in South Yemen. Pohle's arrest by Greek police
last month touched off an immediate effort by the West
German government to have him returned to finish his six-
year sentence, meted out following his conviction in 1974
for membership in a criminal organization (the Baader-
Meinhof group), possession of a weapon, fraud, and forgery.
(Some reports indicated Pohle was convicted of killing a
policeman, but this information apparently was inaccurate.)
The Athens district attorney has appealed the lower .
court decision to the Greek supreme court, and it is expected
that Pohle will remain in jail, at least temporarily.
German officials commented that this case illustrates the
weakness of normal extradition treaties in coping with
terrorists, and points to the need for a new international
convention to deal with terrorists. West Germany intends to
propose such a convention in the United Nations

JDL Members Indicted in New York
Four members of the Jewish Defense League have been
indicted for shooting at Soviet diplomatic buildings, at-
tempting to bomb the Iraqi United Nations mission, and
bombing a gas station. They were also charged with trans-
porting explosives and guns across state lines and con-
spiring to harass the Soviet Union and other foreign govern-
ments "through acts of violence." One of the four is Russell
Kelner, who is on probation for publicly threatening the
life of Yasir Arafat in November 1974. 50X1-HUM
The specific charges include the following incidents
described in previous issues of the Weekly Situation Report:
attempted bombing of the Iraqi mission to the United Nations
on 12 January (13 January issue, page 9); shooting into the
Soviet residential complex in Riverdale, New York on 27
February (2 March issue, page 5); shooting into the Soviet
mission to the United Nations (6 April issue, page 5). The
Jewish Armed Resistance claimed responsibility for all of
these incidents. This is a name used by the Jewish Defense
League to publicly claim responsibility for terrorist acts.
