Receiving Antenna MMulticoupler
To provide for OC requirements the best possible receiving antenna
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
To monitor the commercial and'military developments in the field to
determine if any of these multicouplers provided sufficient improvement to
warrant replacing those now used in OC requirements.

It was learned that the Roma Air Development Center was to mains evaluation
tests on the COB Model CU-1383 lilticoypler. The project engineer moo a trip
to RADC to discuss these tests with the RADC engineers.
RAMC had not yet received the user-test models of the COB Xultieoupler and
therefore had made no tests. They expect to receive the unit to be tested within
the next month or two. It was agreed that copies of their test results would
be forwarded to the Agency when completed.
The general feeling among the RADC engineers was that the COB was an
excellent piece of equipment, but that its cost ($2500) was somewhat out of
line.
It was learned that the Westinewuse Corporation is asking a mult1tO ler
which compares very f vorably, on paper, with the COB unit and the price is
approximately one-half the price of the COB unit. RADC is going to evaluate
this Westinghouse unit and forward the reports to this Agency. Meauv'bile, -
Westinghouse will be contacted in an attempt to obtain one of their sulticouplers
for ei.nation.

The OC-P staff study was received during this reporting period. After
preliminary discussions within OC-E, the study was discussed with OC-P
personnel. Subsequently, a memorandum outlining the OC-E understandings and
comments as follows was forwarded to OC-P.
4. All installation, spares, and accessory items be packaged and stocked
as a single line item for each type of package station.
5. It was recommended that the responsibility for submission of the
annual replacement program be transferred to the Engineering Staff.

6. An orderly program for the replacement of obsolete equipment within
the Strategic Reserve Porgram is to be initiated and will require
a policy decision on "forced issue" of equipment which is no longer
the newest or possibly the best model available. This policy
decision should be publicized throughout Communications, and
decisions as to specific equipment to which the policy will be
applied should be made by the Equipment Board.

Mechanical Transmitter Interlock Switches
PROJECT REQUIREMENT
To increase the safety features of the 16-F and 231-D type transmitters by
providing a mechanically actuated switch that will ground the high voltage when
the doors of these transmitters are opened.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Determine the type and quantity of switches for each type of transmitter.
Have an outside consulting firm investigate the circuitry and construction of
the 16-F and 231-D type transmitters for the best possible arrangement of wiring
and placement of the switches.
This firm will also purchase the switches and other hardware to make an
amount of kits, complete with installations instructions.
Secure authorization to make installation of these switches mandatory.

Review what is currently on the market to determine if there is an
economically suitable replacement for the Northern 107 Model 2 Frequency
Shift Converter.
Prepare a comparison chart of all Frequency Shift Converters currently
being produced, such as the Hoffman CV-60, TNT CPA, Collins 706A-2, Northern
107 and 174, etc., to determine which is the most suitable unit to meet our
requirements.

Work was started on this project, but progress has been slow due to the
fact that delivery of the Model 1FX FS'iquency Shift Kayers (which are used
signal generators in the comparison evaluation tests) from the manufacturer
was delayed.

near future and the project should progress at a normal rate.

To investigate methods for the efficient transfer of R.F. energy from
transmitters to antennas.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This study is to investigate the various methods of transmitter to antenna
switching, associated patch panels, coaxial patch cords and connectors, dummy
loads, standing wave ratio indicating devices, transmission lines, and
matching methods and devices. The aim of this study is to provide a centralized
fund of information on all phases of the transfer of R.F. energy from trans-
mitter to antenna in order to facilitate engineering design.

A coaxial output network, independent of the existing unbalanced output is
required for the 231-D Transmitter.-"
EROJECT DESCRIPTION
The output circuit of the 231-D Transmitter will be investigated and a
suitable network, with provisions for metering, will be designed and fabricated
to accommodate coaxial fittings. The existing outputs (i.e., unbalanced and
balanced 600 ohm line feed) of this transmitter will not be affected. A modi-
fication kit with instructions will be drawn up.

A new approach is being made to this project in view of a more desirable
solution from the standpoint of ease of installation and logistic support.
The solution seems at this time to be a single pole-double throw vacuum
sealed radio frequency relay mounted external to the shell of the transmitter
with provisions for deactivation of the transmitter plate voltage while switch-
ing from coaxial to unbalanced output.
The commercial market is being surveyed to determine the best relay avail-
able for this application.

Teletype Clear Text Alarm
PROJECT REOUIREMENT A device is required which will detect the clear text word
"CITE" when transmitted to a signal line. Upon detecting this word the device
will provide a disabling circuit for the transmitter-distributor and an audible
and/or visual alarm shall be given.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
All signal lines are monitored by model-14 reperforators. Contact assemblies
are available that are operated by the pull bars on the M-14. These contacts
can be added so that they are operated by the space, C, I, T, and E pull bars.
These contacts can be used to control the Clear Text Alarm device. The Clear
Text Alarm device will be either relay or diode operated and contain its own
.power supply.

One Man Radio Station
PROJECT REQUIREMENT
Design a complete one man radio station to be used as a standard for the
planning of all new one man stations or when renovating existing stations.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project was originally started in September 1956 to prepare a bill of
materials and associated drawings to cover the installation of a one man radio
station It has been expanded to cover the installation and
renovation or all one man stations. Using the one man station design as a guide,
a complete bill of materials, associated drawings and installation specifications
will be prepared according to the requirements of each particular station.
