LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The CIA Replies
A Post editorial ["The Victims of
MKULTRA," April 18] proposed inter
alia that persons who without their
consent became subjects of CIA psy-
chiatric and drug testing programs
during the 1950s should be traced and
compensated.
Had The Post the professionalism to
check its facts with the agency before
writing its editorial, it would have
learned that the agency made an in-
tensive effort in the 1970s to identify
and contact any persons who might
have been unwitting subjects of drug
testing programs in which the agency
had been involved. Indeed, on page 19
of the Supreme Court's decision CIA v.
Sims (the decision that prompted The
'Post's editorial), the court in' a foot-
note referred to the agency's efforts in
this. regard' while. Adm. Stansfield
Turner was director of Central Intelli-,
gence.
