NEW MINIATURE CAMERA -- Die Wirtschaft, No 9, 2 Mar 50
A new miniature, single-lens, mirror-reflex camera, the Praktica, has
been introduced by the people-owned.Camera Plants in Dresden-Niedersedlitz.
Of attractive design, the 24 x 36-millimeter camera is simple to operate and
equally effective for both amateur and professional photography.
The Praktica has a'_1 the characteristics of a single-lens mirror-reflex
camera, such as direct focusing on the ground glass panel; identical view-
finder lens and photographic lens, so that the picture recorded on the film
will correspond exactly to the picture seen through the view finder; and
preclusion of parallax errors, even with interchangeable lense3 of varying
focal lengths. The picture as seen through the view finder also shows the
actual effect of the diaphragm setting, that is, the degree of definition
produced under various conditions of aperture ratio. This is particularly
important for close-range photography, where proper depth of focus is
critical, and for portrait photography. Finally, the true picture as seen
through the view finder permits a thorough study of effects prior to re-
cording the impression.
All these features are exceptionally well developed in the Fraktica.
The picture shown on the ground glass focusing panel is particularly bright
and rich in contrasts. A lens mounted in the light shaft magnifies the view
seen through the finder, and the camera can be focused with the diaphragm
open. Subsequently, the diaphragm may be adjusted to the desired opening
without moving the camera, because the settings for diaphragm opening, ex-
posure, and distance can be read from above when the camera is in position.
These advantages also apply to lenses other than standard, such as long-
focal-length lenses and short-focal-length, wide-angle lenses.
For close-range pictures and microphotography, intermediate rings and
adapter lenses can be supplied. For photography at eye level (sports pic-
tures, candid shots) the finder in the light shaft can be used. The shutter
speed may be set for 1/2 to 1/500 second, or for time exposures of any de-
sired length.

MASS-PRODUCES NEW MIRROP MICROSCOPE -- Landes-ZcjL,.ng, No 45, 22 Feb 50
The people-owned Zeiss plant in Jena has begun mass production of a
new-type mirror microscope. The instrument, which has no lenses but operates
on a mirror principle, reportedly is far more effective than the microscopes
which have been in use heretofore. It is completely free of refractional
color effects. Furthermore, the instrument affords the scientist a distance
from the object under investigation which is ten times that provided by lens-
equipped microscopes. This facilitates the use of pincers in working on
live objects.
The mirror microscope was developed by Doctor (fnu) Harting, scientific
director of Zeiss and recipient of the 1949 National Prize award in collabora-
tion with Doctors (fnu) Trapp and (fnu) Gehne.
RECEIVES ORDERS FOR OFFICE MACHINES -- Fehrt frei, No 2, 12 Jan 50
The Association of People-Owned Mechanical Enterprises in Dresden has
received an order for 200 typewriters and eight bookkeeping machines for ex-
port to Sweden. The order, which amounts to 132,000 dollars will be filled
by the.'anderer plant in Siegmar-Schoenau, near Chemnitz.
The Association has also received an order for 1,284 cameras for ship-
ment to Hungary, at a cost of 30,000 dollars.

The people-owned Thorandc Camera Factories (Sachsen) have introduced
their latest model, the SICA, an improved box camera which takes pictures
6 x 6 centimeters, using standard film 6 x 9 B II.
The camera combines outstanding qual'-? with extraordinary price value.
NEW MINIATURE FILM PROJECTOR -- Taegliche Rundschau, No 60, 11 Mar 50
At the Leipzig Fair the people-owned Filmosto-Projektion enterprise of
Dresden is showing a newly developed miniature film projector of small and
lightweight construction and optimum performance. Special features are 100
or 150-watt bulbs with heat filters, the possibility of simple and quick
interchange of film-strip carrier and slide changer, and effective elimina-
ticn of interference from extraneous light. The instrument is equipped
with a Meyer lens, 1:3.5, f = 10 centimeters.
NEW ZEISS LENSES -- Der Volksbetrieb, No 2, Jan 50
The Zeiss Works in Jena have developed a new Tessar lens of a quality
far superior to the Tessar lenses produced heretofore. It has a focal
length of 2.8 centimeters and permits the taking of very clear pictures at
short exposure times. This success is due to the development of new optical
glass by the Otto Schott people-owned plant.

Lange and sons (people-owned) in Glashuette, who heretofore have manu-
factured only ?ocket watches, observers' timepieces, and chronometers for
navigation, recently started mesa production of wrist watches.
of experimentation have gone into the production of the new watch. Requisite
mechanical equipment had to be specially designed and built. The watches
have 15 to 16 jewels and are equipped with Nivarox springs. Certain parts
of the mechanism are silver or gold plated.
