We picked up our pilot at the buoy marked (A) on the referenced chart, on our approach to Odessa, as we had done on previous trips; our ship was anchored at both locations (B) and (C). For navigating this area we used British Admiralty Chart 2206 (small corrections through 195^), both in approaching and entering Odessa. I noted no items of interest with respect to changes in navigational aide, channel markers or predominant structures in the harbor and harbor area. The use of a pilot was mandatory both for entering and leaving port. While in port I observed that considerable construction, apparently warehouses, was in progress inland from the pier at points marked (D) on referenced chart. 2. While in port our crew was issued the normal tw'-piece Soviet passes and were allowed ashore freely. There was a curfew, however, and guards were stationed continuously of the gangway. It seemed to me that the population was vary hospitable and that anti-Communist Sentiment was strong. English and German were spoken predominantly among those with whom I came into contact.
