SOVIETS USE OIL AEROSOLS FOR EXTERMINATING INSECT PESTS
USSR scientists have developed very successful methods for the dispersion
of oils (e.g., solar oil) into aerosols and the use of such aerosols as a
vehicle for insecticides. By dispersing oil in a current of hot air, droplets
having a diameter of approximately one thousandth of a millimeter are obtained.
They form a stable aerosol having the appearance of a fog. Oil aerosols to
which a small quantity of DDT or hexachlorocyclohexane has been added are very
effective against harmful insects and at the same 1+me harmless to humans and
animals. Thus, a cloud of aerosol released in a pasture where cattle or sheep
are grazing kills within a few minutes all harmful insects praying on the
animals and does not bother the animals. Such aerosols are also used for ex-
terminating harmful insects and other pests in the buildings of animal-breeding
farms and stables, as well as grain and produce warehouses.
A portable equipment for venerating aerosol. has been developed by Engi-
neers G. I. Korotkikh and V. V. Stepanov. This equipment can be installed in
a few minutes on an ordinary motor truck. Dispersion of the oil solution is
carried out under use of energy supplied by the eyhaust gases coming from the
truck's engine. With the aid of equipment of this type, up to 30 kolkhoz
barns and warehouses per day or the same number of stables can be treated with
aerosols containing DDT or hexachlorocyclohexane.
