The Institute of Electric Welding imeni Ye. C. Paton raz!:e first in signifi-
cance of accomplishment and successful introduction of results into industry. it
has developed a new technology of low carbon steels for reliable welding equip.-
meat, bridge-building work, etc. The Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy obtained
heat-resistant and high-stran?"'tb W.cys, and i eveloped new .. t_echn-o ogr for =lt
ing steel. The Institute of Structural Mechanics derelopeda method and equip-
ment for studying the complex stress state of metals. The Institute of Electro-
technics investigated aaathods for automatic regulation of generator voltage with
an electromagnetic aqAifier and cor~Aeted the theoretical and experimental study
of high-frequency generators. The Institute of Thermal Power Engineering con-
ducted theoretical end ex!,erimental studies on gas turbines, and developed the
basis for computing and constructing Industrial crndeusere. The Institute of
Mining Mechanics insist N. 1L. Fadarov developed a now technology for cooling the
air in deep pits in the Dcebas (the Donbas now employs this method), and offered
a now, more effective method for Mon-pit mining of liwntte in the Ukraine. The
Institute of !iydrology s By rst--ec cs inavesti rated the water reocurcec of
the Demises and ltirivcy Bog Basin, tabulated the characteristics of Ukrainian k'$vera,
and completed a series of studies = hydraulics and bydrotechnical construction.
In lk)ruam,- 19W no Caw it for the Study of the Productive Forces of the
Ukrainian SCR was restored its function of int, fzatIng the work of scientific
institutes on fundamental problem, The councille plan included the following
problems of importance to the Ukrainsi arid regime of the southern Ukraine,
fertilizer', the problem of utilizing Ukrainian brown coal, the problem of
utilizing natural and inde,,?'rial gases, the problem of utilizing omall Ukrainian
rivers, development of the productive forces of the Trsnscerpethian region, and
development of the Ukrainian Poles 'ye (forest region). Ruch data of considerable
significance in the solution of these problem van obtained during 1948, but
fiesl Judgment of the reskats of the coudoil's work must wait until the end of
1949, when basic work on these problem will be completed.
