THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION TTSSR WEATHER AND CROP INFORMATION 23 - 29 OCTOBER 1952 24 October 1952 On 23 October, cold, cloudy weather without precipitation prevailed in the Baltic republics, Belorussia, northwestern and central regions of the European USSR, and central chernozem zone. Daytime temperatures in the above-mentioned areas ranged between zero and 3 degrrss above zero. Light snowfalls were recorded in the northern and northeastern regions qnd the northern Urals. Precipitation In the form of snow fell for a short period in the southern Urals, the areas of 1Cuybyshevekaya and Saratovskaya oblasts east of the Volga, and western Kazakh SSR. During the first half of the day, the amount of precipitation in some areas amounted to 9-16 millimeters. Light snowfalls up to 2 centimeters were recorded in parts of Kuybyshevskaya Oblast. Daytime temperatures were zero in Sverdlovsk, and'2 degrees above zero in Chkalov and Saratov. Light rains fell in most of the Ukraine including the southern portion and in Rostov Oblast. It was dry in the Nortbsrn Caucasus and the Transcaucasus. Day- time temperatures were 8 degrees above zero in Kiev, 9 in Dnepropetrovsk, 16 in Rostov on the Don, and 21 in Krasnodar. Dry weather prevailed in western Siberia. Light snow fell in Kemerovekaya Oblast and Altay Kray. It was moderately warm and dry in Kazakh SSR and Central Asia. 26 October 1952 On 25 October, light frosts and snowfalls were recorded in the northern and northeastern regions of the European USSR. Daytime temperatures were one degree below zero in Arkhangal'ak and Kirov and 3 degrees below in Sverdlovsk and Ufa. The weather was comparatively warm in the Baltic republics and Belorussia. Day- time temperatures were 5 degrees above zero in Minsk and 7 in Riga. Light rains fell in some areas. Cold weather was recorded and snow fell in the central re- gions of the European USSR and the central chernozem zone. Daytime temperatures were 2 degrees above zero in Moscow, and one degree in Orel and Tambov. Daytime temperatures were 14 degrees above zero in L'vov, 16 in Odessa, and 18 in Kiev and Kishinev. Warm weather accompanied by heavy rains prevailed in the por- tion of the Ukraine west of the Dnepr and the northern Caucasus. Precipitation amounted to 12-16 millimeters locally. It was dry throughout the Volga region. It was very warm and dry in the Transcaucasus. Daytime temperatures were 19 de- grees above zero in Yerevan and 21 in Tbilisi. Cold weather with light snow prevailed in Western Siberia. Temperatures dur- ing the day were 6 degrees below zero in Omsk, and 3 degrees below in Novosibirsk and Barnaul. It was warm and dry in Central Asia. Daytime temperatures were 18 degrees above zero in Tashkent and 23 in Ashkhabad. During the night, light frosts were recorded. 28 October 1952 On 27 October, overcast weather prevailed in most of the European USSR. Snow fell in many areas of the central regions, Kirovskaya Oblast, and the Urals. Rains fell in the Baltic republics. During the day, temperatures were around zero in Leningrad, Moscow, Kuybyshev, and Chkalov. Temperatures ranged between 6 and 7 degrees above zero inthc Baltic re- publics, Belorussia, central chernozem zone, and the western Ukraine. Noon tem- peratures were 13 degrees above zero in Kishinev and Rostov on the Don, 23-24 de- grees in Simferopol' and Krasnodar. Cool weather was increasing and spreading in the central zone of the European USSR. Growth of winter crops and pasture grass continues in most arers of the Ukraine, lower Volga region, and especially in the Crimea and Northern Caucasus. Winter crops are still growing slightly in Belorussia and the central chernozem zone. The weather in Western Siberia has become warmer. Temperatures were zero in Omsk and Novosibirsk and 2 degrees above zero in Barnaul. Frosts with tempera- tures 3 and 4 degrees below zero during the day were recorded in Irkutskaya Oblast and Krasnoyarskiy Kray. It was very cold in Yakutia. The temperature in Yakutsk was 23 degrees below zero and 39 below in Verkhoyansk. 29 October 1952 On 28 October, cool weather which began 27 October in the northern regions of the European USSR increased and spread to the south. Noon temperatures were zero in Minsk, Kursk, and Saratov, -2 degrees in Tambov, -3 in Moscow, -4 in Ufa and Kazan', -7 in Sverdlovsk, Kirov and Vol.ogda, and -10 during the day in Syk- tyvkar. Temperatures in Moldavia, Crimea, the southern Ukraine, and Kuoan' were about 12 degrees above zero, and they exceeded 20 degrees in Tbilisi and Yevevan. Cool weather lessened precipitation in most areas. Snow fell only in Komi ASSR and the middle Volga region from Gor'kiy to Saratov. On the morning of 27 October, snow cover extended to a line running approximately from Tikhvinin Leningradskaya Oblast through Kostroma, Cbeboksary, Ulyanovsk, and Magnitogorsk. The growth of winter crops has ceased in Belorussia and the central chernozem zone; it ccntinues in most areas of the Ukraine, Crimea, and Northern Caucasus. Temperatures during the day were 3 degrees below zero in Omsk and 5 below in To- bol'sk. Farther east, warmer weather prevailed. Temperatures were 6 degrees above zero in Novosibirsk and 9 in Barnaul. Snow fell in Tobol'sk, Krasnoyarsk, and Chita, and rain in Novosibirsk. It was warm and dry in Central Asia. Temperatures exceeded 20 degrees above zero in Tashkent, Ashkhabad, and Stalinabad. On 27 October, the highest tempera- ture in Stalinabad was 30 degrees above zero. 30 October 1952 On 29 October, cool weather spread from the central regions of the European USSR to the Volga region, Northern Caucasus, and Kazakh SSR. In Rostov on Don, the temperature dropped to zero as compared with 9 degrees above zero the day be- fore; in Stalingrad and Voroshilovgrad, it fell to one degree below zero as com- pared 8 degrees above zero the .day before; and in Aktyubinsk, it dropped to 2 de- grees below zero. During the day, the coldest temperatures were recorded in the Urals. Daytime temperatures were 12 degrees below zero in Sverdlovsk and 8 below in Ufa. Strong winds, snowfalls, anu snowstorms were recorded in the Urals and in Kirovskaya, Gor'kovskaya, Ul'yanovskaya, and Kuybyshevskaya oblasts. The depth of the snow cover in some areas of the Urals increased 10 to 25 centimeters. The weather became warme? in the Baltic republics, Belorussia, and the west- ern Ukraine. Daytime temperatures were 4 degrees above zero in Riga and 10 de- grees in L'vov. Warm weatb.r prevailed in Moldavia, the southwestern Ukraine, and Transcaucasus. Daytime temperatures were 15 degrees above zero in Tbilisi eM 18 in Yerevan. Rains fell in many areas. No frosts were recorded. Light snowfalls accompanied by strong winds occurred in Western Siberia. Day- time temperatures in Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk ranged between 2 and 3 degrees below zero. Strong winds were recorded everywhere in the Kazakh SSR and Central Asia. Daytime temperatures in Central Asia and southern Kazakh SSR were high.
