PUBLIC WORM AND MWICE IN 1948
The Ministry of the Interior reports public service projects valued at
2,962,420,000 lei. The work falls into four categories:

a. Repair and enla:gemeat of the pumping stations of C,oostanta, Pitesti,
To mu Megurele, Buzau, Ploestl, Ca*pina, Turda, Dje, Targal Mures, Satuy*re,
Oradea, Cluj, and Tulosa.
b, Collecting and conveying spring rater in Suoeava, Okobesti, !letesti,
Barsad, Teouoi, Predeal, Giurg'u, Timisoars, Arad. In eons of those cities, the
work has been completed, in others it is still in progress.
o. Building reservoirs in Rcvaa, Bacau, Barlad, ]!I mioul Saret, Brasov,
Targu Jin, Bistrita. Sow are completed and sass are still in progress
d. Installations to improve the quality of water (firers, ehloriaating
plants, settling basins, etc.) in Calarasi, Braila, Predeal, Turau 1lllgurele, Djs,
and. Arad.
e. Collecting and conveying spring water and building a new network of
aqueducts- in the rural districts, especially Feldioara and Crisbar Communes of
Brasov Jndet.
f. Supplying Teal 3.9 Soaita bathing beach with drinking water (dril)Ang
of a very deep well still in progreols).
g. Preliainary planning of the drinking-water-supply project for Resits.
h. In B.harsst and the surrounding territory the following work has
been done: ooanreting filters Ro 10,11, and 12 at Arcade.; lining of the Areuda
aqueduct (12 kilcasters); extending the teeding lines; supplying public institu-
tions with water; extending the sever systems to the workers quarters; deepisdag
and straightening the Daabovita Steer; *to.

The work mentioned above, and other work of lees importance, amounted to
830,281,000 lei. Pumping stations distributed 117,312, 520 cubic maters of water --
58,106,000 cubic meters outside Bucharest and 59,206,520 cubic meters in Bucharest
and suburbs. The foregoing figures show an increase of 5 percent in the provinces
and 10 percent in Bucharest over 1947.
a. Seeping power plants in working order -- general repairs to 37 Diesel-
operated power plants.
b. Restoring plants destroyed during the war in Batu-Mare, Botosani,
Falticeni, Ours, Hwnorulul, Vatra Dornei, Reamn, Targul Mures, and Turns feverin.
c. M9derntzing the power-distribution systems in Ours Hurorului, Campu-
lung Moldorenesc, Lugo,, Vascau, Periam, and Teius.
e. Restoration of hydroelectric stations in Caransebes) Timieoara, Tietrita,
and Hateg.
f. Rnlargipp.the electrical plants in Ramnicul 8arat, Odorhei, Mierouraa
(Ciuc Judet), and Foosa i by installing Diesel engines and generators.
g. Initial contraction work on a 4,000-horsopow')r hydroelectric plant
on the Orisul Repede River to supply Oradea-Mare.
h. Construction of new plants in Baeaud and Fetesti.
i. Purchtne of boiler installations at the Braila and Tiaieoara plants.
J. Supplying Plants with installation (cooling towers, electric pumps,
reservoirs, buildings) in Turnn Magursle, Sglowra, Campuluag Moldorenese, Bucharest,
Ours Humorului, Botosrni, Bacau, Turnu Sererin, Timieasra, Petrosani, Resits, and
Oheorgmeni.
k. Restoring and extending the high- and low-tsu'tca[ over lines in
Caspulung Moldorenes-, Botonaai, Cqua Hrnorulul, Hateg, Caransebes, Orsora, retrosani,
Resits, Mud, Abrud, Calarasi, BrL'-la, Constants, Bistrita, 6m.,r4, Targul Mires,
SStu-riare, and 8alonta.
1. Connecting the distribution networks of Oiurglu, Bnsau, Ploesti,
Calarasi, and Hateg to the regional lines.
i m. Electrification of rural am working centers in DTs" Dods (Ialomita
Judet), 8o0emi, Poiaaa Capin (PPahova Judet), Zitin, Tarlungeni, Purcareni, Bndils
(Brasor Joist), Sineria Veche, Turdas-fat, Spini, Baoia-fat Tanpa, Basdat and the
town Rasdat, Upper and Lover Eadaetla, Ilia (Hunedoas, Judet), Corasinti (mad Judet),
and Cobs (Bihor Judet),
The value of the foregoing or- other smaller works amounted to 761,000,000
lei. The 19116 kilowatt-1 rsr production 5i2vas 110 million, a 1inorawee of 9
percent over 1947 production.
3. Improvement of Ccemon Carriers
Streetcars, trolley buses, and autobuses are used for passenger transport
in Bucharest, Oradea, Arad, Timisoara, Craiora, Ploesti, Brasov, Braila, Cla3ati,
Iasi, Constants, Club, Turda, Resita, Oravita, and De,a.

a. xtersion of the streetcar and trolley bus lines in Arad and Tiaisoars.
b. More extensive use or oreaticn of autobus passenger transport in Suceava,
Bacau, Braila, Calarasi, Brasov, Ploeeti, Craiova, Orevita, Resits, Arad, sad Tnrda.
c. Repair and constriction of new streetcar& in Iasi, Braila, Tinisaara,
and Arad. In'Bucharest: repair of 190 motorcars and trailers, acquisition of 23 new
trailers and 3,600 tone of rails, construction of 426 concrete polasejewVlmte over-
hauling of the wires cf the streetcar lines, repair of Bonaparte depot, repairs and
improvements on garages and depots, construction of a modern iron foundry, and
r :quisition of various tools, machinery and equipment, and motor vehicles.
The value of the work done and the equipment acquired amounted to 623,895,000
lei. The number of passengers carried by vehicles outefde Bucharest for 1948 vas
121,577,E as against 104 million for 1947, an increase of 16 percent; in Bucharest,
there were 432,047,350 passengers in 1948 as against 333,494,221 in 1947, an increase
of 33 percent.
4. Street Classing and Refuse Disposal
a. Acquisition of oa.?te and animals in Vaslui, Rumr?oul Garet, Constants,
Ploeeti, Buzau, Campine, Giurgiu, and others.
b. Acquisition and repair of automotive vehicles in Huai, Rammioul Swats
Constanta, Craiova, Ploeeti, Brasov, Sibiu, and Arad.
o. Repair of equipment in Taei, Constants., Calar.ai, Reanioul 8arat, Teouoi,
Buzau, Ploeeti, Campine, Timisoara, and Sibiu. In Bucharest, 62 pieces of antos-o-
tive equipment have been acquired, houses hare been repaired, and new oeiastruction has
been effected.
The value of the forgoing works amounts to 115,440,000 lei, inallading the
now equipment.
Oonstraration of ice plants, dance halls, giarr~ee, etc., ou~sids 24obares
amounted to 25,000,000 lei.
In Bucharest, the work of controlling the Dambovita River anal of strnaagthen-
ing the dame amounted to 8,000,000 lei.
The expeMltures on public works and saiTices amountsd to 2,363,420,000

Voluntary labor was particularly important in constructing the Axed and Tialsosra
