SUBJECT: Briefing on Afghanistan/Pakistan for the SSCI
Thursday, 5 June 1986, 1600-1700 hrs., 219 SHOB
1. The SSCI has requested an intelligence briefing on
the current situation in Afghanistan and the impact of the
insurapnnv on Pakistan. The briefing should be at the
level for members and staffers. Marvin Ott
is the point of contact in the SSCI for the
Zffn
briefing.
2. The SSCI would like a general update on the situation
in Afghanistan, along the following lines --
-status of the insurgency,
-the impact of the Afghan factor in Pakistan,
-the status of Soviet-Afghan relations, including
level of support to the Kabul Government.
3. The SSCI mentioned to State/INR that a briefing was
being requested. Chief, INR, offered to attend the briefing
and possibly provide some input to the discussion. However,
State participation in the Thursday briefing will be decided
by CIA. Mr. Abramowitz has asked Kathy Daly of INR to
contact the SSCI on this proposal.
4. Ott suggested a 15-minute briefing on the points
listed above and the remaining time devoted to questions/-
answers. He emphasized that the briefing should be general
--across-the-board-- in order to bring the SSCI up to date on
the Afghan/Pakistani situation.
