+ SOVIET ANNIVERSARY - Moscow television is providing extensive
coverage of all major events marking the celebration of the 70th
anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, including
Gorbachev's three-hour speech on the morning of 2 November and the Red
Square parade scheduled for 7 November, and this coverage is being made
available simultaneously to Headquarters viewers through FBIS' foreign
television monitoring facilities. In dealing with the substance of
Gorbachev's speech, the FBIS Wire Service began carrying reports and
out-of-turn excerpts on his call for revision of Soviet history of the
Stalin era and restructuring of the economy soon after the speech ended;
the translation of the full text of the lengthy speech cleared the Wire
Service within 12 hours.
+ PHILIPPINES REMOTE MONITORING - Following a visit to Manila by the
FBIS Hong Kong bureau chief and the regional engineer from Okinawa, the
remote monitoring unit at the American Embassy in Manila began limited
operations over the weekend. All equipment and communications lines have
been installed, allowing Hong Kong Bureau to remotely tune and receive AM
and FM radios from Manila. The full capability of the remote unit,
including television monitoring, will be achieved later in the year when
a contractor is brought on dut to handle functions requiring manual
operation of the equipment.
