I am writing you to request information on Soviet capabilities to rapidly deploy nuclear-
driven directed energy weapons.
Could you tell me -- in an unclassified form -- whether the CIA believes the Soviet Union
presently can deploy nuclear driven directed energy weapons such as X-ray lasers without
having to conduct any additional nuclear explosive tests of such devices?
I appreciate your assistance and cooperation in this matter. I ask that you respond to
this request within 10 working days or by May 27, 1986. If you are unable to provide the
requested information within this time period, then please provide an interim response by
the stated deadline explaining the reason you are unable to comply with my request and
precisely when you will be able to provide a full and complete response.
