5 December
On 4 December, moderate subzero temperatures prevailed in most of the
European USSR. Daytime temperatures averaged about 10 degrees below zero. Noon
temperatures were 5 degrees below zero in the Baltic republics and the Ukraine,
4 degrees above zero in Simferopol', 9 in Krasnodar, and 14 in Tbilisi.
A snow cover, the depth of which exceeds 20 centimeters in many areas, covers
the fields almost everywhere, except in the region east of the Volga, the Caucasus,
and the southern Ukraine. Snow fell in the central chernozem zone, and the central
and northwestern regions. Rain fell in the Crimea. The growth of winter crops
continues In the Caucasus and the Transcaucasue, but in the rest of the European
lnSR, they are in the quiescent stage. Due to the snow cover, winter crops are
in good condition.
Clear weather, with subzero temperatures ranging between 15 anal 20 degree?
below zero, prevailed in Western Siberia and northern Kazakh SSR. Te:ape==;;:-e
dropped as low as 25-30 degrees below zero in central Kazakh SSR. Daytime

On 8 December, light snowfalls were recorded in the northern half of the
European USSR. Their southern boundary ran from Tartu (Estonian SSR) to Kaluga,
Moscow, Kazan', and Chkalov. Precipitation in the form of rain and snow was
recorded in the northern Caucasus and the western Georgian SSR.
The southern boundary of the snow cover followed a line running from Kherson
to Voroshilovgrad and Verkhniy Baskuncbak (Astrakhanskaya Oblast). The depth of
the snow cover has reached 15 centimeters in many areas of Kirvogradskaya, Dnepro-
petrovskaya, and Khar'kovskaya oblasts, and the Moldavian SSR. Noon temperatures
in the above-mentioned areas ranged between 11 and 13 degrees below zero, with
the minimum temperature dropping as low as 20 degrees below. Cold weather was
recorded in the Far North. Temperatures ranged between 6 and 8 degrees below
zero in the rest of the European USSR. Temperatures in Simferopol' and Kras-
nodar were about 3 degrees below zero.

Light snowfalls were recorded in Western and Eastern Siberia and the northern
Kazakh SSR? Daytime tempezatures were 13 degrees below zero in Novosibirsk, 14
be low in Ahmolinsk, and 20 below in Barnaul. Comparatively moderate subzero
temperatures prevailed in the Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk areas, where daytime temper-
atures averaged about 8 degrees below zero.
Temperatures were above zero in Central Asia. Daytime temperatures were 2
degrees above zero in Ashkhabad, 6 in Tashkent, and 11 in Stalinabad.
On 9 December, light snowfalls were recorded in all the northern and central
region of the European USSR north of a line running from"Rovno to Kursk, Saratv,
and Chkalov. During the first 12 hours of 9 December, strong winds and snowstorms
were recorded in the central regions.
During the night, subzero temperatures as low as 20-25 degrees below zero
were recorded in Khar'kovekaya, Sumskaya, and,Kirovskaya oblasts, some other
areas of the Ukraine, and the Moldavian SSR.
Daytime temperatures ranged between 22 and 23 degrees below zero in the
northeastern region (Kirov, Syktyvkar), between 14 and 17 below in the northern
regions of the Urals, and between 9 and 11 below in the central regions. Temper-
atures ranged between 5 and 9 degrees below zero in the Baltic republics, Belo-
russian SSR, and most of the Ukraine and Volga Region.
Rains, with precipitation amounting to 12-19 millimeters, fell in t%e wee,.ern
Georgian SSR and the Transcaucasus. During the day, the temperature in Yerevan
was 8 degrees Above zero,
Moderate subzero temperatures prevailed in Western Siberia. Light snowfalls
occurred. Daytime temperatures were 11 degrees below zero in Omsk, and 8 below
in Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk.
Temperatures in Central Asia ranged between 2 and 7 degrees above zero.
Light subzero temperatures were recorded during the night.

On 10 December, cloudy weather without precipitation prevailed in most of
the European USSR. Heavy snowfalls were recorded in Rostovskaya and Astrakhan-
skaya oblasts, the Baltic republics, and the northeastern and northern Urals.
it became much cooler in all the southern half of the European USSR. The temper-
ature dropped 5-10 degrees from previous days. Daytime temperatures were about
15 degrees below zero in Orel, Voronezh, Dnepropetrovsk, and Stalingrad, and
about 17-19 below in Kuybyshev and Saratov. The lowest subzero temperatures
were recorded in the northeastern regions. Temperatures were 24 degrees below
zero in Sykty7kar, 23 in Sverdlovsk, and 21 in Ufa.
Cooler weather prevailed in the Crimea and the Kuban'. Temperatures were
5 degrees below zero in Simferopol' and Krasnodar. Comparatively warm weather
prevailed in the Transcaucasus; precipitation fell only locally. Daytime
temperatures in Yerevan and Tbilisi were about 8 degrees above zero.
Light snow fell in Western Siberia and the northern portion of Eastern
Siberia. Temperatures during the day ranged between 9 and 11 degrees below
zero.
Cloudy weather, without precipitation, prevailed in Central Asia and
southern Kazakh SSR. Temperatures during the day were 11 degrees above zero
in Ashkhabad, 5 in Tashkent, and one In Dzhambul.

below zero in Moscow, -2 in Riga, -4 In Minsk and Orel, and ?6 in Voronezh. It
was 2 degrees above zero in Leningrad and Petrozavodak.
Moderate subzero weather prevailed in the Middle Volga Region and the
Urals. Snow fell locally. Noon temperatures were 12 below zero in Saratov,
16 below in Kuybyshev, 17 below in Kazan', 20 below in Kirov, and 25 below in
Sverdlovsk.
On 10 December, heavy rains fell in the Georgian SSR and the Armenian SSR.
Snowfalls were recorded in the Northern Caucasus, with a snow cover 3-5
centimeters deep forming locally. A light snow cover has also formed in some
areas of the southern Ukraine and the Caucasus.
Comparatively warm weather, with snowfalls, strong winds, and enowsiorms
prevailed in Western Siberia.
Heavy snowfalls were recorded also in Irkutskaya Oblast.
Rain fell in Central Asia. Daytime temperatures were 5 degrees above
zero in Tashkent, and 9 in Stalinabad.
Warmer weather, which began on 12 December in the western and central
regions of the European USSR, spread to the northern and northeastern regions.

It became much warmer in the Urals. Daytime temperatures were 15 degrees below
zero in Sverdlovsk (as compared with 25 below the day before), 7 below in Ufa,
(24 below the day before), and 9 below in Chkalov, (22 below the day before).
Snowfalls, which were heavy locally, fell in all the northern and northeastern
regions.
Cloudy weather without precipitation prevailed in the rest of the European
USSR. Daytime temperatures almost everywhere ranged between 2 and 6 degrees
below zero. Temperatures were one degree above zero in Lvov and Kishinev, 2
in Odessa, and 5 in Simferopol'. It became warmer in the Northern Caucasus.
During the day, the temperature in Krasnodar was zero. It also became warmer
in the Transcaucaaus. Noon temperatures in Tbilisi and Yerevan were around 2
degrees above zero.
Light snowfalls occurred in Western Siberia and eastern Kazakh SSR.
Temperatures dropped everywhere.
Very cold weather prevailed in Central Asia and southern Kazakh SSR. With-
in a 24-hour period, the temperature dropped to 17 degrees below zero. Daytime
temperatures were 12 degrees below zero in Tashkent, 13 below in Dzhambul, and
2 below in Stalinabad. As a result of snowfalls, light snow covers have formed
in several areas.
14 December
On 13 December, comparatively warm weather with moderate subzero temper-
atures prevailed in all the European USSR. Daytime temperatures in the north,
for example, around Petrozavodak, as well as in the south, in the Dnepropetrovsk
area, were about 5 degrees below zero. The same temperature was recorded in
Minsk and Chkalov. Very low subzero temperatures were recorded only in the
northern portion of Arkhangei'skaya Oblast and Komi ASSR, where temperatures
ranged between 24 and 30 degrees below zero. ',farmer weather prevailed in the
Crimea and the Euban'. Daytime temperatures i:ie ort degree ;oove zero in
Krasnodar, and 8 in Simferopol'.
Light precipitation fell in the Baltic republics and all the northern
and northeastern regions. Rains fell on the southern coast of the Crimea, the
Black Sea coast of the Caucasus, and some areas of the Transcaucasus. Day-
time temperatures in Tbilisi and Yerevan were about 6 degrees above zero.
Warn weather with snowfalls, snowstorms, and strong winds is gradually
spreading in Western Siberia. Daytime temperatures were 10 degrees below
zero in Tobol'sk and Omsk, -17 in Barnaul, and -19 in Novosibirsk.
Cold weather prevailed in southern Kazakh SSR and the republics of
Central Asia. Daytime temperatures were 9 degrees below zero in Ashkhabad,
14 below in Tashkent, and about 14-17 below in the Dzhambul and Alma-Ata
areas.
16 December
On 15 December, warm weather prevailed in the European USSR. Daytime
temperatures, even in the Urals, were higher than 10 degrees below zero.
Temperatures were 5 degrees below zero in Oor'kiy and Tambov, 3 below in
Minsk and Ssxatov, and 2 below in Arkhangel'ak and Riga. Noon temperatures
in almost all the Ukraine ranged between 2 and 3 degrees above zero. Temper-
atures were 5 degrees above zero in Odessa, and 12 in Simferopol' and Krasnodar.
There was no snow in the Crimea, the southwestern Ukraine, Astrakhanakaya
Oblast, and the Northern Caucasus.

Winter crops are in good condition everywhere. Winter crops have a pro-
tective snow cover in almost the entire European USSR, except in the southern
regions. Snowfalls in the Baltic republics and the Belorussian SSR bre gradually
spreading into the central zone.
On 14 December, strong winda, snowfalls, and snowstorms, accompanied by
cooler weather, prevailed in Western Siberia as far as the Baykal Region. On
15 December, the temperature dropped to 22 degrees below zero in Novosibirsk,
and to 25 below in Krasnoyarsk. It was comparatively warm in Omsk and Barnaul,
with temperatures ranging between 10 and 12 degrees below zero.
Warmer weather prevailed in Central Asia. Daytime temperatures were one
degree below zero in Ashkhabad, and one degree above zero in Tashkent. On
previous days, temperatures ranged between 10 and 15 degrees below zero in these
localities.
17 December
On 16 December, warmer weather prevailed in the European USSR. Noon temper-
atures were 1-2 degrees above zero in Leningrad, Riga, Minsk, Moscow, Orel, and
Kiev, 4 in Kursk, It in Rostov-on-Don and Voroshilovgrad, 9 in Dnepropetrovsk,
10 in Krasnodar, and 15 in Simferopol'. Moderate subzero temperatures prevailed
in the Urals and the Middle Volga Region. Temperatures were 10 degrees below
zero in Sverdlovsk and Chkalov, and 5 below in Kazan' and Kuybyshev.
On 15 December, precipitation was recorded in all the western half of the
European USSR, including Arkhangel'skaya, :.ostromakaya, Ryazan'skaya, and
Voroshilovgradskaya oblasts. On 16 December, rains fell in the Baltic republics,
the Belorussian SSR, and the central zone. Snowfalls occurred in the Urals.
Thawing taking place almost everywhere, except in the Urals, has diminished
the snow cover, and snow has disappeared from the fields in some southern areas
of the Ukraine. The growth of winter crops and pasture grass has resumed In the
Crinca and the Kuban'. An ice crust has formed in the central zone and the
Belorussian SSR.
Very low subzero temperatures prevailed in Western Siberia.
Rains fell in the mountain regions of Central Asia.

18 December
On 17 December, warm weather prevailed in the Crimea, the northern Caucasus,
the Ukraine, the central region, and the northeastern region. In Moscow, for
example, the mean diurnal temperature was almost 10 degrees higher than the
average of several years standing, and the maximum temperature was only a half
degree lower than the maximum recorded for the last 70 years.

Kirov, and Syktyvkar.
Rains fell in the areas of the Ukraine west of the Dnepr, in the central
chernozem zone, and the Middle Volga Region. Especially heavy rains were
recorded in Odesskaya Oblast and the Moldavian SSR, where the amount of pre-
cipitation in a 24-hour period ranged between 11 and 14 millimeters.

Warm weather caused a rapid thawing of the snow cover. It has disappeared
completely south of a line running from Vinnitsa to Stalingrad, and very little
snow remains in the fields in the northern regions of the Ukraine, the central
chernozem zone, the southern Belorussian SSR, and in some areas of the central
region.
Snowfalls were recorded in the central region, the Urals, some areas of
the Far North, and the northern regions of the Ukraine.
Temperatures were 3 degrees below zero in Sverdlovsk, and 6 below in Ufa
and Chkalov.
Cold weather prevailed in Western and Eastern Siberia. Daytime temperatures
were 23 degrees below zero in Omsk, 26-28 below in Wovosibirsk, Barnaul, and
Irkutsk, where minimum temperatures ranged between 32 and 35 below. Light snow-
falls were recorded in the northern regions of Western Siberia.
Cold weather prevailed in the Kazakh SSR and Central Asia. Daytime temper-
atures were one degree below zero in Stalingbad and Tashkent, and 5 baby In
Ashkhabad. Light snow fell in the Uzbek SSR. A *.ow cover has formed in many
areas of Central Asia.
