DUMP TO BE BUILT NEAR CANTON; COMMUNISTS SEIZE CIVILIAN FIREARMS, ORGANIZE BICYCLE CORPS 3,000 WORKERS BROUGHT FROM OTHER PROVINCES -- Hong Kong Kung-shang Jih-pao, ~+ May 50 Canton, 3 May -- An informant has revealed that in Sha-ho village, lo- cated northeast of Canton, more than 3,000 construction workers have been brought in from Hunan and Hupeh provinces by the Communists during the past few weeks to be used for the construction of a large underground ammunition dump in Shou-kou Shan, located east of Canton. These workers are quartered in temples in Sha-ho, and they are not allowed to leave their areas. Al- though many construction workers are needed for this ,job, the Communists are not hiring any local laborers because they fear leakage of the secret. According to another informant, work is to begin on 5 May 1950, under the. supervision of ten or more Russian construction engineers who also ar- rived recently. If all 3,000 workers are used every day, the project will be completed in 6 months. When finished, the ammunition dump will have vari- ous safety and fireproof devices, air conditioning, and air-purifying systems. TROOPS TAKE FIREARMS FROM CIVILIANS -- Hong Kong Kung-shang Jih-pao, 4 May 50 Macao, 3 May -- Suspecting that the civilian population is responsible fir continuous guerrilla activities, the Communist troops i.n Hsin-hui, Kwang- tung Province, began seizing all firearms hidden among the civilians. Ac- cording to a recent 9xrival from Hsin-hui, the Communist troops raided Ch'ao- lien village recently, and seized 250 rifles, 13 light machine guns, one mor- tar, and several other firearms. However,,,,suspecting that more arms were hid- den in the village, they sent troops to~.put?on a mock bandit attack during the night. The village people, unaware of the Communist trick, began shooting with what they still had in their possession, and were soon disarmed. CHUA'G-SHA fLSIEN ORGANIZES BICYCLE MILITIA -- Hong Kong Hsing-tao Jih-pao, 27 Apr 50 Chung-shan, 26 April -- Over 6,000 bicycles are registered in Chung-shan Hsien for freight- and passenger-carrying purposes, 2,000 of them for individ- ual use. The Military Commission, perceiving the advantage of this type of trans- port for police force mobility, with the aid of the local police, has comman- deered 1,000 bicycles from local bicycle shops. It has also announced e training course for able-bodied bicycle riders who wish to enlist in a bicycle militia corps to assist the authorities in preserving order. CANTON KMT SPECIAL AGENTS CAPTURED -- Hong Kong Ta Kung Pao, 8 May. So Canton, 7 May (Hsin-hua) -- The Canton Public Security Bureau announced that during January through April, some 253 KMf special agents, including the chief and deputy chief of the Canton KMT special agent unit, were arrested. Captured equipment included 19 radio transmitter sets, 102 small arms, 79,400 rounds of ammunition, and 80 catties of explosives. It also reported that during the same period, some 400 HINT special agents surrendered voluntarily to the Communist authorities.
