SOVIET-SATELLITE TROOP MANEUVERS TN HUNGARY, 1952 CZECHOSLOVAF; AND RUMANIAN TROOPS IN HUNGARY, --Rome,Bollettino Danubiano,17 Jun 52 At the beginning of the second half of May a significant number of motor- ized and armored Czechoslovak troops arrived in Hungary. These troops, thought to be a mixed division, with motorized irfartry, new type T-34 tanks, and field and antiaircraft artillery, were moved in rail convoys of 25 to 30 cars each. They arrived at the border station sf Szob at night and stopped there for a short while, during which time the men were not permitted to leave the train. The convoy then continued on to Vac and Aszod. It was noted that the equipment, such as rifles, submachine guns, machine guns, and tanks, were all of Russian type. The morale of the troops appeared to be very low. A few, who managed to get in touch with the Hungarian populace, gave them to understand that they do not know whether they had come for summer maneuvers or to strengthen the Hunger- ian-Yugoslav border. However, theybelieved that they would stay for a long time. Similar information has been published in the latest issue of Hun aria, a Hungar- ian emigre newspaper. Other correspondents of Bollettino Danubiano have re- ported that Rumanian troops will also arrive in Hungary in the near future. Soviet and Satellite Troops Hold Maneuvers On orders from the Soviet General Staff, summer maneuvers are being held in Hungarian territory between the Danube and Tisza rivers in the vicinity of the Yugoslav border. Hungarian and Soviet divisions and other units of the Satellite countries are engaged in the maneuvers. For the time being, the ma- neuvers will develop separately in several areas for the purpose of training, gaining a knowledge of the terrain, etc. Soviet-Hungarian armored troops (light, medium, and heavy) are conducting exercises in the area including the towns of Cegled and Szolnok. A total of two divisions viththeir respective attached units are said to be participating.
