The course of training at both academies and seminaries is 4 Ecclesiastical Academies N The Moscow and Leningrad ecclesiastical academies accept persons 18-50 years of age, with completed secondary education, who can pass examinations in: the Cld Testament, New Testament, Dogmatic Theology, MIral Theology, Fundamental Theology, Comparative Theology, Liturgy, Christian Church History, Russian Church History, Homiletics, History and Analysis of Schisms and Sectarianism, Practical Administratir,n for Priests, USSR Constitution, Greek and Latin, and a modern language. First category graduates (honor students) of ecclesiastical seminaries '.asiring to enroll in the academies must ta._e oral examinations in the New Testa- ment, Dogmatic Theology,, and General Church History to 1054, must write a sermon, and take a written examination in Fundamental Theology. Second category gradu- ates, to be eligible for enrollment, must first take re-examinations at their seminaries in those subjects in which they received unsatisfactory grades. In addition, applicants are required to have a reading knowled:.e of Church Slavonic, and must be able to write Russian fluently. Persons desiring to enter second-, third-, or fourth-year classes at the Moscow Seminary :must have a tenth-grade education and must be able to pass all examinations required of graduates of the previous classes. At the Leningrad Seminary, persons are permitted to enter third-year classes if they have a tenth- grade education and are able to pass examinatiorsin: Bible History of both Old and New Testaments; the Holy Scriptures of boa'- :d and New Testaments; Catechism; Church Regulations; Ancient Christian Churc. . "; Russian Church History; Church Slavonic; Russian; USSR Constitution; and _...-ch Singing. Applicants for enrollment in both academies and seminaries must present the following documents: (1) application; (2) completed questionnaire, includ- ing name, date of birth, social status, education, family status -- bachelor, first or second marriage, whether divorced (underlined), number and ages of children or family depeadents, draft status, police record, place of employment and duties, home address, date questionnaire was filled out, signature, and two photographs; (3) birth certificate; (4) record of education; (5) doctor's certi- ficate on state of health; (6) record of family status; (7) autobiography; (8) a letter of recommendation from a parish priest or bishopric, or, if a grad- uate of a seminary, a letter of recommendation from the seminary council; (9) record of draft status. Applications must be sent before 15 August 1951 to the Moscow Ecclesiastical Academy and Seminary, Zagorsk, Moscow Oblast, Troitse Sergiyeva Monastery, or to the Leningrad Ecclesiastical Academy and Seminary, Leningraa, 167, Obvodnyy kanal, 17. Entrance examinations will be given from 14 to 21 August, with instruction beginning 1 September 1951. All students enrolled will be provided with stipends. The Moscow Academy and Seminary both provide students with living quarters, while living quarters at the Leningrad Academy and Seminary are provided only for out-of-town students.(1) Zhurnal Moskovskoy Patriarkhii, which is the official publication of the Moscow Patriarchate and represents the entire Russian Orthodox Church, did not mention enrollment in any of tho other church schools, including the Volyd', Stavropol', Kiev, Saratov, Odessa, and Minsk ecclesiastical seminaries, all of which had been identified during the past year in that periodical. During the 1949 - 1550 school year, the Moscow Ecclesiastical Academy and Seminary had a combined enrollment of 184 students. At the end of that school year, six students were graduated from the academy and 38 from the seminary.(2) Of the 38 seminary graduates, 14 applied for admission to the academy for the 1950 - 1951 school year, while the remainder were assigned to parishes.(3) At that time, the academy and the seminary had a combined staff of a rector, an - ' - RESTR!CM STAT Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/10/17: CIA-RDP80-00809A000700030395-9 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/10/17: CIA-RDP80-00809A000700030395-9 RESTRICTED RESTRICTED inspector, sir_ professors, four docents, and six instructors.(2) The Academy and Seminary have been without a rector since the death, in October 1950, of the Very Reverend A. P. Smirnov, who took over that post on 15 August 1949.(4) The Leningrad Ecclesiastical Academy and Seminary, during the 1949 - 1950 school year, had a total of 172 students. Seven students were graduated year. the academy and 14 from the seminary at the end of the 1949 1950 The teaching staff then included a rector, an inspector, three professors, ten docents and five instructors.(2) The present rector is Simeon, Bishop of Lvga.(5) The Volyn' Ecclesiastical Semin.::Y, Orel Oblast, ccmpleted its fifth year of operation on 7 June 1950. The seminary graduated 16 students at the end of the 1949 - 195 school year, according to its rector, N. Tuchemskiy. The Stavropol' Ecclesiastical Seminary graduated its first 4-year class in June 1950. (No figures were given as to number of graduates.) The rector of the seminary is I. Bogdanovich.(6) The Kiev Ecclesiastical Seminary also '--d its first 4-year class atthe end of the 1949 - 1950 school year, but asi- from a statement that none of its students had failed at the end of the school ye,-x, no figures were given as to the number of graduates.(7) No statistical information is available on the Saratov, Odessa, and Minsk ecclesiastical seminaries, all identified in Zhurnal Moskovskoy Patriarkhii during the past year.
