TO GO INTO EXPERIMENTAL PRODUCTION -- Leningradakaya Pravda, 15 Dec 50
Several months ago, a brigade composed of members of the Leningrad Aranch
of the Scientific Technical Engineering Association of Water Transport, in coll-
aboration with a mechanic from the experimental workshops of the Central Scien-
tific Research Institute of the Maritime Fleet, worked out, designed, and pro-
duced an instrument for measuring liquid levels.
This instrument has great economic significance. It can be used to determine
the water level in the ballast tanks of floating docks, and the level of fuel oil
in the fuel tanks of ships, as well as to measure liquid pressure. It would be
a conservative estimate to say that the savings effected by using this invention,
for maritime transport alone, will amount to more than 200,000 rubles per year.
The Minister of the Maritime Fleet USSR has ordered prizes for the inventors,
and has commissioned the Central Technical Administration to make plans within a
month for production of an experimental series of the new instruments.
In September, a deputy minister instructed the director of the Gunboat Plant
to draw up a contract with the experimental workshops of the Central Scientific
Research Institute of the Maritime Fleet for producing the experimental series, as
well se for assisting the workshops in assembling the new instrument and putting
it into operation.
Since this. time, more than 2 months have passed. In spite of the fact that
the instrument is very necessary to many economic organizations of the Maritime
Fleet, including the Gunboat Plant itself, the director has not yet made a contract
with the experimental workshops of the institute. -- S. Lyzlov

DEVELOP AUTOMATIC FEEDER -- Leningradskaya Pravda, 21 Dec 50
Coworkers of the Chair of Glass Technology of the Leningrad Institute of
Precision Mechanics and Optics are testing a new attachment for grinding and
polishing machines. It is an automatic feeder, which mechanizes the process
of supplying abrasive sol~rtion in the machining of precision optical parts, eye-
glass lenses, and plate glass.
The scientists have set themselves the goal of helping the producers to in-
troduce high-speed methods of machining glass in the mass output of optical parts.
They must modernize existing equipment and improve technology. The automatic
feeder, developed by Engineer Z. I. Kryzhanovskiy, is the beginning. Testing
of the device in production has shown it to have substantial advantages over other
types of feeders. It is now being introduced into factory practice.
A valuable improvement in tae method of polarizing microscopes was made by
M. M. Fusinov, Stalin Prize winner and professor of the institute.
Not long ago at an expanded session of the scientific council of the mechani-
cal optics faculty, at the Vyborg Palace of Culture, scientists and production
workers discussed ways of further development of creative collaboration.
SUPPLIES INSTRUMENTS FOR MAJOR CONSTRUCPION PROJECTS -- Moscow, Komsomol'skaya

The Tbilisi Gidrometpribor Plant has produced hydrogeological and meteoro-
logical instruments which are being successfully used in the construction of the
Kuybyshev and Stalingrad hydroelectric stations. Not long ago, the plant also
produced and shipped several earth augers for the construction of the Turkmen
Canal. A few days ago, it received a new order, to make hydrogeological instru-
ments for the Volga-Don Canal and for irrigating the land in Rostov and Stalin-
grad oblasts.
