OF PAGES 1 SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO. THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION The Ministry of Agriculture announces that its 1949 plan for the improve- ment of livestock has been successful. All of the 1,200 stables planned for 1949 have been built and the following judets have even surpassed their plan: Tulcea, Ramnicu-Sarat, Buzau, Vlatsca, 011, Du?.j, Gurj, Timis, Sever", aune- doara, Alba, Turda, Mures, Trei Scaune, Bacau, Somes, Maramures, Campulung, Baia, Suceava, Botosani, Dorohoi, and Radauti. In order to improve the breed, '0,500 bulls (;00 above plan), 5,800 rams, and 4,211 boars have been procured. There were imports of 267 blooded bulls, 12 cows, and 22,000 day-old chicks. Also, 60,300 lambs and 25,550 young rams of the fine- and semifine- wool breed were transferred from their native habitat to regions wLere long- haired sheep are raised. The plan for establishing hatcheries had been exceeded by 10 percent through the setting up of 44 hatcheries which have received 140 incubators from the Ministry of Agriculture. During 1949, these stations distributed 111,000 day-old chicks and the State Agricultural Farms 41,000 roosters and 5,600 ducks. Sericulture has been intensified; 570 kilograms of silkworm seed and 842,855 kilograms of cocoons have been produced. Forage crops have been planted on 193,090 hectares of pasture lands, trees have been cleared from 180,369 hectares, 45,631 hectares have been treated with fertilizer, and 18,502 hectares of protective bands have been planted. In order to form new cadres, the Ministry of Agriculture is giving courses in chicken hatcheries to 80 pupils, in artificial insemination of sheep to 165, and in pasture improvement to 175.
